Pair of 6-Figure Transactions Including the Year's 2nd Biggest Sale Top This Week's Domain Sales Chart

As we told you last week, AutoInsurance.org changed hands for $440,000 in a deal brokered by Andrew Rosener at MediaOptions.com. That sale was reported just as we were going to press and since there was an existing website on the domain we needed to find out whether the buyer - 360 Quote LLC - paid that amount for the domain or for a developed website.

We have been told that the current barebones site has been left in place only to preserve search engine positioning and that AutoInsurance.org will be re-developed from scratch, which would make this a domain sale by our standards. Even the current search engine position (page 20 on Google when we searched "auto insurance" today - trailing even the .info version of the name) is of minimal value, reinforcing our belief that the price was based on the domain name.

So, AutoInsurance.org goes into the top spot on this week's Top 20 Sale Chart and also ranks as the year's second biggest sale to date, trailing only GamesForGirls.com which sold for $500,000 in February.

By Ron Jackson

Sedo claimed the runner-up spot with a nice six-figure sale of their own - Mind.com at €120,000 ($171,600). Sedo wound up taking nine places on the Big Board - more than any other venue - including three of the top four spots.

Sedo's haul included two of the four ccTLDs on the all extension leader board but, for a change, they did not have the highest country code sales. That honor went to NoktaDomains.com who sold CoffeeTables.co.uk and DiningTables.co.uk for $37,500 each - a price that allowed those two domains to share the #5 position. Sedo's two ccTLD sales were #12 Indiretta.it (Italian ccTLD) at $20,020 and #13 SEO.in (Indian ccTLD) at $18,500

The non .com gTLDs have only one representative on the elite list but they made that one count with AutoInsurance .org taking the top spot.

The AfternicDLS had a solid outing with a hand in four charted sales led by #9 AWI.com at $22,500. They sold two others on their own and also shared the $15,088 sale of #17 WhatThe.com with their domain listing service partner GoDaddy Auctions. GoDaddy took two other positions solo with one of those landing on the top half of the chart at $21,400. (Editor's Note: after publication of this article we began a review of that sale as the transfer does not appear to have been completed).

MediaOptions added a second top ten entry with #8 eCashAdvance.com at $23,000. Michael Berkens's MostWantedDomains.com also took a chart bow this week with #18 (tie) GiveLove.com at $15,000

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, April 3:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

The ccTLDs had a very good week with ten domains cracking the five-figure mark. That group filled out the top half of our new Country Code Top 20 Chart with the NoktaDomains sales of CoffeeTables.co.uk and DiningTables.co.uk sharing the top spot at $37,500 each.

We noted all of the five-figure sales in the all extension section at the top of this report, so the highest country code sale you haven't seen yet is #11 Poespas.nl, sold by BliXem Internet for $9,152. Sedo was next with #12 Law.eu at $8,812 and they wound up sweeping 17 of the 21 chart entries (the extra spot resulted from a tie for the final position).

Among extensions, Germany's .de had the most chart entries with six followed by Great Britain's co.uk with four. Here is how the Country Code Top 20 stacked up for the week ending April 3

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
