$1 Million Sale Sets New High Water Mark for .Org Domains & Previously Unannounced Purchase Becomes 2nd Biggest in That Extension

This has been quite a week for the .org extension. First came Sedo's announcement that they had brokered the biggest .org sale of all time, a deal that sent Poker.org from National A-1 to PokerCompany.com for a cool $1 million. Prior to that the highest reported .org sale was Engineering.org, a name that changed hands several years ago for $198,000. Then on Monday we revealed the previously unannounced sale of Blackjack.org for $298,000 in October 2007. That domain had also been purchased PokerCompany.com, so they now own the two most expensive .org domains ever reported sold.

Poker.org easily tops our new weekly domain sales chart, while Blackjack.org has been added to our final 2007 Top 100 Sales Charts where it now ranks as the 2nd bggest non .com gTLD sale of that year (trailing only RealEstate.net which sold for $300,000). Blackjack.org also becomes the 35th biggest sale reported, regardless of extension, in 2007.

By Ron Jackson

While Poker.org stole the headlines, it wasn't the only big sale reported over the past seven days. Two 6-figure heavyweights also closed in that time frame; #2 LoanCalculator.com at $215,000 and #3 CashUSA.com at an even $100,000. LoanCalculator.com had been auctioned off by Moniker last month at the DOMAINfest Global confererence and CashUSA.com was sold through the AfternicDLS.

Poker.org wasn't the only .org on our all extension leader board this week. #10 Dating.org crashed the top half of the elite list with a $22,500 sale (also made through the Moniker/DOMAINfest Global auction).

There are also a pair of ccTLDs on the Big Board; #9 Underdog.co.uk, sold at Sedo.com for £15,000 ($23,100) and #15 CarParts.com.au, an Australian country code that fetched $16,225 at Drop.com.au

The .coms flexed their muscles by sweeping 16 of the 20 chart positions. Sedo led the race among venues, ringing up nine charted sales. Moniker had three from their DOMAINfest Global auction and two other venues; SnapNames.com and Latonas.com each placed a pair of names in the Top 20. DotcomAgency.com and NameConnect.com also earned chart honors.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 21:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

The ccTLDs posted a quartet of five-figure sales this week, all noted in the all extension section you read above. Underdog.co.uk led that pack after a $21,300 sale at Sedo. The top country code sales you haven't seen yet rank #5 and #6 on our new Country Code Top 20 chart. Those are MaklerManager.de at $8,033 and IOW.co.uk at $7,700. Sedo sold both of those domains and went on to sweep 15 of the 20 chart entries.

As is usually the case, Germany's .de extension had the most chart entries with seven, followed by .co.uk (Great Britain) and .com.au (Australia) with 3 each. .It (Italy) and .tv (Tuvalu) also had multiple entries with two each. One of the .tvs was an IDN - #13 москва .tv ("Moscow" in Russian), sold at IDNForums.com for $5,000.

Here is how the country code leaders stacked up for the week ending Feb. 21:

Global Contenders (Non .com gTLDs: .biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .pro & .tel)

The Global Contenders finally had a breakout week thanks to that $1 million sale of Poker.org - the highest sale of the new year in any extension. This category can thank the .orgs for its strong showing - they swept the top four positions on our new Global Contender Top 20 Chart.

The .nets made their first appearance with #5 ModernWomen.net at $8,400 via the AfternicDLS. The .nets usually have the most chart entries week in and week out, but not this week when the .orgs won the race with 11 charted domains. The .nets had 9 leaving no opening for the rest of the non .com gTLDs.

The .org onslaught continued with #6 UVC.org, sold at Sedo for $7,140. Here's how all of the Global Contenders stacked up for the week ending Feb. 21:
