Year's 1st Reported 7-Figure Domain Sale Headlines a Banner Week as DomainNameSales.com Breaks the Ice

It took two months to break the ice, but the year's first reported 7-figure domain sale is now in the books. Frank Schilling's DomainNameSales.com did the honors with PersonalLoans.com at an even $1,000,000

That name topped a stunning hit list of February sales at the firm that gave DomainNameSales.com 10 of the 20 entries on our new all extension Top 20 Sales Chart, including 7 places in the top 10 (and those were just sales they were able to share with me - the majority of their sales were subject to non-disclosure agreements).

Their list was mostly made up of company owned domains but also included some names owned by others that were sold through their platform, including #2 LOV.com, a domain placed there by broker Maureen Sullivan, that changed hands for $160,000.

By Ron Jackson

Several other major sales venues also enjoyed banner weeks, including Sedo.com who reported logging more than $3.5 million in total sales last week. Leading their ledger was #3 Kboing.com at a cool $150,000 and #5 LandmarkGroup.com at $50,000. Sedo went on to pile up seven chart entries overall.

The AfternicDLS, as they always do, also shared in the bounty. Though their sweet spot is the mid four-figure price range favored by the  SMB market (small and medium sized business) that they target, they rang up three of the week's highest reported sales, including #4 ApartmentListings.com at $87,500. YummyNames used the AfternicDLS platform to sell #15 (tie) Capitalists.com at $20,000.

The .coms had a dominant week, sweeping 16 of the 20 chart entries. The ccTLDs were next with three, led by the DomainNameSales $45,000 sale of #6 (tie) Flu.ca (Canadian country code). Sedo posted the other two charted ccTLD sales, both German .de domains - #14 TEV.de at $20,250 and #17 Tanga.de at $18,359

The non .com gTLDs were limited to one spot on the Big Board and that was not one of the usual .net or .org suspects. This time .pro grabbed the spotlight with #11 Tech.pro at $25,500 in a sale handled by the AfternicDLS.

Here's how the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 26:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

It was such a good sales week we could have filled a second Top 20 Chart with five-figure sales and still had names left over. There were 23 more sales at this level that did not make the elite list above but would have charted in most other weeks.

DomainNameSales had more than half of those including BirthdayCentral.com, PunchDrunk.com and VinylReplacementwindows.com at $15,000 each. They also scored with WatchMyWatch.com ($12,500) and a trio of names at $12,000 apiece that included BackpackingAustralia.com, HeartValveSurgery.com and PritningUSA.com.

Also at DomainNameSales.com, DatabaseUSA.com drew $11,500, KitchenTowels.com absorbed $11,000 and ActiveConnection.com kicked in $10,500. Four others; Aereos.com, DogFoodRecipes.com, TowTruckForSale.com and EXO.org added $10,000 each

At Sedo RomeApartments.com returned $15,000, MedLaser.com landed $14,000 and Wayland.com went for $11,475. CDNReviews.com and Sucre.com tacked on another $10,000 apiece

The AfternicDLS deposited $13,000 for Acuto.com while MostWantedDomains.com collected $12,500 each for WhiteTowels.com and CottonTowels.com. BrightNames.com also got into the acting, tuning into $11,000 with I-TV.com.

 .Com Supporting Cast

As always there was a big supporting cast of solid four-figure .com sales. The AfternicDLS, which logged close to $1.4 million in total sales last week, had two of the highest in that group; BathSheets.com and Medicals.com at $9,000 apiece. SeedBed.com sprouted $8,800, LanguageClasses.com translated into $8,500 and AskAlex.com answered with $7,900.

AboutMeditation.com merited $7,500, WebBuilding.com billed $7,288 and CIEC.com secured $7,200. SchoolActivities.com attracted $7,000, Weet.com captured $6,400, EngineeringPrograms.com produced $6,160 and LearningActivities.com lassoed $6,010

Country Codes

The trio of five-figure ccTLD sales you saw on the all extension Top 20 Chart at the top of this report, led by Flu.ca at $45,000, fill the first three slots in our latest weekly Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart. The highest sale from this category that you haven't seen yet is #4 USA.me, a domain that changed hands for $9,200 at Sedo.

Sedo, who went on to pile up 16 of the 20 chart entries, rounded out the first five with Who.me at $8,277. DomainLore.co.uk prevented them from sweeping the next five too by claiming the #8 spot with BouncyCastleHire.co.uk for $6,519.

Sedo's romp through the second 10 was interrupted only by a pair of Australian sales. VirtualPropertyExpert..com.au sold #12 MyLoan.com.au for $5,400 and NetFleet.com.au moved #15 AllTrades.com.au for $4,882

Germany's .de and Montenegro's .me wound up tying in the race among extensions with each taking six chart entries. Australia's .com.au was the only other TLD with multiple entries taking two spots. Six other nations claimed one place apiece.

A quartet of five-figure sale set the pace for the non.com gTLDs this week. As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
