The only ccTLD on this week's Big Board is a three-letter
Indian domain - CEB.co.in - that changed hands in a private
transaction for $10,000 (the seller was Telepathy
Inc.).
The AfternicDLS
joined Sedo and Toby Clements as the only venues with multiple chart
entries. The AfternicDLS scored four times with a quartet of .coms
led by a name they sold for YummyNames,
#11 YouPrint.com at $12,000.
One other note related to high value domain sales before we get
to this week's chart. George
Kirikos let us know about some very interesting domain
valuation information he discovered in an SEC
filing made by BankRate.com. The company has been
actively buying online businesses and in this filing they broke out
what they considered, for accounting purposes, to be the value of
the domain names only that are being used in some of those
businesses. The figures were startling, for example, $40.9
million for NetQuote.com, $26.5 million for CreditCards.com
and in a real head scratcher, $2.7 million for Bargaineering.com.
We don't track domains that change hands as part of developed
businesses, but these lofty valuations are worth noting and, as you
might guess, are sparking a good bit of debate on some
of the blogs that George also shared the information with,
including EliotsBlog.com,
TheDomains.com,
and DomainNameNews.com.
DomainShane.com
is also attracting comments on this topic.
It looks like BankRate also made a couple of domain only cash purchases (at much more believable prices). I will be taking a look
at those and if they check out will likely add them to our 2010
Top 100 Sales Chart.
Now, back to the task at hand - here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the
week ending Sunday, August 21:

Keep in mind that these are the highest
value sales that have been reported to us in the
past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool,
not a complete list documenting ALL high
value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce
because many sales are kept private at the insistence of
buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the
accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.
|
For
the many newcomers entering the domain
industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market.
If you do not understand why specific domain names command the
prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases.
We highly recommend that you do some basic research before
you buy anything! As a starting point we have
built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes
This was a rare slow week for the ccTLDs
witj just one sale in this category breaking the five-figure barrier
- CEB.co.in at $10,000. in a private transaction. Sedo
took the next four places on our new Country
Code Top 20 Sales Chart with a group led by #2 Ganzeinfach.de
at $7,920 and # 3 (tie) Groove.me and Haier.pl at
$7,200 each. Sedo's $7,000 sale of #5 (tie) Fab.cc shared
that spot with the AfternicDLS sale of Secure.me.
Sedo went on to sweep 18 of the 20 chart entries
including #7 TC.tc (a rarely seen country code extension that
represents the Turks and Caicos Islands) at $5,760.
As is usually the case, Germany's popular .de
extension had the most chart entries with four, including #10 ZocDoc.de
($5,141). Only two other TLDs had multiple chart entries; .me
(representing Montenegro) and .ch (the cctLD for
Switzerland). The remaining positions were split up between
extensions representing 12 different countries - the most
diversity we've ever seen on our Country Code Top 20 Chart.

A pair of five-figure sales rung up by the

saw in the all extension section earlier, MutualFunds.org
went for $15,000 and Bulbs.net lit up $10,000.
Sedo claimed the #3 spot with Rheuma.info at $9,360,
then the AfternicDLS reeled of three in a row with #4
