Latest news of the domain name industry

An Especially Relevant Domain in Today's Economy - SelfEmployed.com - Leads This Week's Sales Chart

With jobs few and far between in the current stagnant economy, a lot of people are now working for themselves (a career choice many in our industry made when they got into this business). That makes the highest reported domain sale of the past week - SelfEmployed.com at $58,000 via Sedo.com - an especially relevant domain for the times we live in.

The new owner's identity is currently shielded by WhoIs privacy, but it looks like a good buy to me. With information on self employment opportunities in high demand, I could see someone with expertise in that field building a very profitable business on SelfEmployed.com.

Sedo went on sweep the first six positions on our new all extension Top 20 Sales Chart, nine of the top ten spots and 13 of 20 overall. Their roster included the three domains that tied for the runner-up position at $30,000 each; FoodTruck.com, G.biz and Rome.net. StreetChat.com rounded out the top five at $22,000. Sedo sold that domain to the operators of the popular financial site TheStreet.com on behalf of seller DomainMarketers.com

By Ron Jackson

Sedo filled the #6 slot with the week's highest ccTLD sale - Scan.me at $20,000. One other country code domain also earned a spot on the Big Board - #14 YSL.co.uk, also sold by Sedo, at $9,960.

The non .com gTLDs were also limited to two chart positions with, as we noted above, G.biz and Rome.net filling those with their share of the #2 hole. The .coms ran the rest of the table, piling up 16 of the 20 chart entries.

The AfternicDLS had another solid outing, taking five places on the elite list led by #7 Chapter7Bankruptcy.com at $18,000. The only other venue with multiple chart entries was WinnerNames.com who hit the daily double with #12 (tie) DailyCapital.com at $10,000 and #16 (tie) RealEstateDigital.com at $9,000

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, August 14:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

As you saw in the all extension section above, Sedo rang up an impressive $20,000 sale with Scan.me this week and that domain leads our new Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart, with another name that also made the all extension leader board, YSL.co.uk, taking the #2 spot on the ccTLD ladder.

The biggest country code sales you haven't seen yet are a pair of French domains; #3 Chien.fr at $8,085 and #4 Bash.fr at $7,350. Sedo handled both of those sales and went on to sweep 19 of the 20 chart entries. The sole exception was DomainLore.co.uk's sale of #17 C.org.uk at $3,071.

A pair of $30,000 sales that rank among the year's 15 biggest sales in the .non com gTLD category set the pace on our new Non .Com gTLDs Top 20 Chart this week. As you saw in the all extension section earlier, Sedo moved those two domains; G.biz and Rome.net
