Sedo Strikes $71,000 Gusher With Sadara.com to Take Top Spot on This Week's Domain Sales Chart

Sedo claimed the pole position on our latest weekly all extension Top 20 Domain Sales Chart with Sadara.com at $71,000. The buyer appears to be the Saudi Arabian Oil Company who filed for a trademark on the term "Sadara" in March. The TM application covers chemicals and the same holding company and law firm now shown on the WhoIs record as the new owner of Sadara.com already owned Sadara-Chemical.biz. The law firm, located at the same address as the holding company, also appears to be the same firm that filed the Sadara trademark application on behalf of the Saudi oil company.

Sedo went on to place five more domains in the first ten and piled up 12 of 20 positions overall. Their hit list included #3 Fietsen.com at $35,000 and the top ccTLD - #5 Women.co at $25,000 (Sedo sold that domain for DomainMarket.com owner Michael Mann.)

The AfternicDLS also had a strong outing, claiming two of the top four sales and a half dozen places on the Big Board overall. Their biggest scores were #2 NursePractitioner.com at $36,300 and #4 FullContact.com at $30,800.

By Ron Jackson

Also earning chart honors this week were the Toby Clements Newsletter with #6 (tie) FootballHelmets.com at $20,000 and Moniker/SnapNames with #13 BCR.com at $15,210

12 of the 20 charted sales were .coms. The country codes claimed five places, including another top ten entry - #9 Krankenzusatzversicherung.de ("supplementary health insurance" in German) at $17,041 via Sedo. The non .com gTLDs rang up the other three sales with a trio of .nets that included #11 IEA.net at $16,488 through the AfternicDLS.

While no six or seven figure blockbusters are on the chart this week that doesn't mean that big deals aren't getting done. Most remain subject to NDAs or change hands in more complicated transactions that prevent them from being ranked among the all-cash paid-in-full single name domain sales that we track. Rick Schwartz provided a perfect example of the latter situation when he announced he has closed a deal this week to sell a pair of generic gems - Property.com and Properties.com - in a package deal initially valued at $4 million. However, Rick told me that he also  received a 5% equity stake in the new venture as part of the deal and also agreed to give the buyers discounts if they make early payments toward the sale price. At this stage, no telling what his final payout will be from this terrific tandem, but Schwartz clearly did very well, just as the masterful negotiator has done in so many previous transactions.

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, July 17:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Non .com gTLDs (.biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

After getting shut out in the five-figure sales department last week, the non .com gTLDs bounced back with four in that range this week. We showed you those in the all extension section earlier and you see them again in the first four slots on the new Non .Com gTLD Top 20 Sales Chart below.

The highest sale in this category that you haven't seen yet is #5 CME.net, a domain that drew $9,940 at Sedo to give the .nets a sweep on the first five positions on the leader board. The .orgs made their first appearance at #6 with the AfternicDLS sale of ComputerScience.org at $6,000. .Info also made a top ten appearance with #10 ORI.info at $4,260

Overall the .nets had the most chart entries with 15, followed by the .orgs with four and .info with one. In the race between venues, Sedo and the AfternicDLS wound up in a dead heat with each claiming half of the 20 chart entries.
