Half Million Dollar Sale at Sedo - 2011's Biggest Deal to Date - Headlines This Week's Action in the Aftermarket

2011 has a new king of the hill, or should we say queen of the hill? GamesForGirls.com surged to the top of our Year To Date domain sales leader board, as well as this week's all extension Top 20 Chart, after changing hands at Sedo for a cool $500,000. That sale headlined a spectacular week for the popular aftermarket venue as they went on to sweep 15 of the 20 chart positions, including 8 of the first 10.

The Sedo onslaught continued with #2 TZ.com at $80,000, #4 MyShow.com at $51,375 and #5 ChinaStock.com at $50,000. Moniker/SnapNames prevented Sedo from having a complete stranglehold on the top ten by taking #3 with LoanQuotes.com at $75,000 and #6 (tie) with Camera.net at $35,000.

By Ron Jackson

Sedo accounted for three of the four ccTLDs that earned spots on the elite list, led by an IDN, #9 Großhandel.de at €19,999 ($27,399). GoDaddy Auctions claimed the one charted country code sale that Sedo did not have - #12 (tie) Whisper.me at $17,500

The non .com gTLDs have three representatives on the Big Board. In addition to the previously mentioned Camera.net, #12 (tie) Checker.net chalked up $16,440 and #20 Marketing.info fetched $10,099 with Sedo ringing up the latter two sales.

Chart honors also went to Greg Richard who sold #17 SoundScience.com for $15,000 in a private transaction and to the AfternicDLS who booked $12,000 for #19 Pinkzone.com.

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 20:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

The five five-figure ccTLD sales we told you about in the all extension section above set the pace for the country codes this week. #1 Großhandel.de (IDN) at $27,399 through Sedo also earned a place among the year's 10 biggest ccTLD sales to date (2nd chart on that page).

The biggest country code sale you haven't seen yet is #6 HMH.es (ccTLD for Spain), a domain that changed hands for $9,700 through Sedo. #7 Avendre.ca (Canadian country code) was next after being sold by iREx Corp for $7,500 in a private transaction.

In a related note, iREx also revealed that they sold Coupons.ca in the fourth quarter if 2010 for $85,000. We will be adding that sale to our list of 2010's top sales where it will rank 15th among ccTLDs and #99 (tie) among all extensions.

Sedo swept 18 of the 21 places on our new weekly Country Code Top 20 Chart (the extra spot resulted from a three-way tie for the final position). Blixem Internet was one of the venues that evaded a Sedo monopoly. They scored with #8 Ledereen.nl at $6,928.

Here is how the Country Code Top 20 stacked up for the two weeks ending Feb. 20:

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
