Latest news of the domain name industry

Editor's Note: I was in Los Angeles last week covering the DOMAINfest Global Conference so there was no sales column Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011. However, I will bring you completely up to date on all sales reported since our last column below (published Jan. 26) with a double-length report that I expect to publish on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 9.

Sedo Sweeps First Seven Spots on This Week's Domain Sales Chart With 2-Digit Domain Setting the Pace

We may be in the middle of winter but things appear to be heating up at Sedo.com. They rang up the seven biggest sales reported this week and claimed 12 places overall on our new all-extension Top 20 Sales Chart. A two-digit numerical domain, 06.com, led the pack at $91,888. The next five names were also .coms, including #2 Coyote.com at $65,000 and #3 Serbia.com at $62,000

The ccTLDs made their first appearance at #6 (tie) with Sedo's $34,250 sale of NordGold.eu. They also sold the .com version for the same price. That was one of four country codes on the Big Board. #10 Fridges.com.au (Australian ccTLD) also cracked the top half of the elite list with a $20,000 sale at NetFleet.com.au. #11 Pimp.tv led the second half of the chart after AllThings.tv completed a $15,250 sale of that domain. .

By Ron Jackson

The buyer of Pimp.tv paid for the domain over a 12-month span with the seller pointing the domain to their nameservers while they made payments and started developing the domain. That is why the domain is nicely developed now. Once the final payment was made this month the seller transferred the domain to the new owners making the sale eligible for our charts. I offer 12-month plans like this myself to make it easier for small businesses on a budget to buy a domain they would be unable to pay for upfront in one lump sum. It has worked well for me and produced several sales that might not have been made otherwise, so this may be worth considering if your own domain sales are sluggish.

The non .com gTLDs had only one representative on the leader board but it was a very nice one - in fact the highest of this new year for the category. That was #8 England.net, a domain that UpmarketURLs.com brokered for $30,000

Moniker/SnapNames was the only venue other than Sedo to post multiple chart entries. They hit the daily double with a pair led by #9 Mumu.com at $27,060. Solo chart honors went to NameJet, GoDaddy Auctions and QualityNames.com.

Here's how the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 23:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

.Com Supporting Cast

As a result of new domain multiple listing services like the AfternicDLS you have probably noticed that more sales are being shared by more than one venue. Country Codes

The country codes had another healthy week ringing up six five-figure sales. You saw all of those in the all-extension section at the top of this report, so the highest ccTLD sale you haven't seen yet is #8 on our new Country Code Top 20 Chart. That is Dry.me, a domain that wrung $9,132 out of a buyer at Sedo.

A trio of German .de domains, also sold at Sedo, completed the first ten. #8 PotenzProblem.de drew $8,152, Patientenanwalt.de docked at $7,124 and TravelDeal.de attracted $6,850.  Sedo went on to sweep 19 of the 22 chart entries (the extra positions resulted from a four-way tie for the final spot.

ExcellentDomains.ca was one of the few venues that kept Sedo from monopolizing the entire board. They scored with #12 KCC.ca at $6,720.

As has pretty much been par for the course, the non .com gTLDs had just two five-figure sales reported this week but, as we noted earlier, one of those - England.net at $30,000 through UpmarketURLs.com - is the highest sale reported in this category so far in 2011

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
