AfternicDLS Rings Up a Half Dozen Five-Figure Sales Including the Week's Biggest

The AfternicDLS is off to a quick start in 2011 with the top three sales on our first Year-To-Date Chart of the New Year (combining sales from the first two weeks of 2011). On the aftermarket's second lap around the New Year track over the past seven days, the AfternicDLS rang up four of the top eight sales, including the biggest - MAAC.com at $63,000. They took six places overall on our latest weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart.

In recent years the company has had a laser like focus on the SMB (small and medium size business) market which has produced tons of solid four-figure sales with a few Top 20 transactions thrown into the mix. Now it is starting to look like high end deals could also become a regular part of the AfternicDLS diet.

As they always do, Sedo also had a very strong outing piling up five of the top 10 sales and sweeping 13 of 21 places overall (the extra position resulted from a tie for #20). A ccTLD, #2 TuttoAuto.it ("all cars" in Italian) led the Sedo charge at €33,600 ($45,360). They also scored with a pair of names that tied for #4 on the Big Board. Another country code domain, Enracha.es (Spain's ccTLD), and Coulisse.com commanded $27,000 apiece.

By Ron Jackson

All told ccTLDs claimed seven places on the elite list. Five of those belonged to Sedo including a Korean IDN, 카지노.kr, at #17 after an $11,500 sale. The two country code sales Sedo did not handle came from Jay.ca who sold #7 HorseRacing.ca (Canadian ccTLD) for $19,000 in a private transaction and FabulousDomains.com.au who moved #11 Claims.com.au (Australian country code) for $16,500

With .coms taking a dozen places on the elite list that left just two openings for non .com gTLDs. The highest of those was #12 Real-Estate.asia at $14,175 via Sedo. #15 Stress.net was next at $12,150, also through Sedo.

Here's how the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 16:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

In 2011 the country codes are continuing the roll they have been on for several years now as they continue to outperform the non .com gTLDs week in and week out. The ccTLDs rang up seven five-figure sales this week with Tuttoauto.it at $45,360 taking the pole position on our new Country Code Top 20 Chart

All of those five-figure sales made the all-extension Top 20 chart you saw earlier in this report, so the highest ccTLD sale you haven't seen yet is #8 Promotions.ch, a Swiss country code domain that attracted $9,450 at Sedo. #9 LaserWorld.de hit the 9K level as well in a $9,113 deal, also handled by Sedo who swept 16 of the 20 chart entries.

Here is how the Country Code Top 20 stacked up for the week ending Jan. 16:

Non .com gTLDs (.biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

Let's start with a little house keeping in this section. In the past we have referred to the non .com gTLDs as "Global Contenders" and that was the name of our Top 20 Chart for this category. However, it has never been a standard term and outside of our columns probably left room for some confusion as to exactly what we were talking about. It is almost always better to be specific and though Non .Com gTLDs is a clunkier term (the reason we coined Global Contenders to begin with) it still does a better job of describing the TLDs in this group. The start of a new year seemed like a good time to make the change, so we have done so.

Unfortunately a new appellation isn't likely to restore this group's mojo as the non .com gTLDs watched  the ccTLDs go by them in the fast lane a few years ago and have never caught back up. We now only see two or three five-figure sales in this category most weeks. There are three this week, led by Real-Estate.asia at $14,175 through Sedo. That is telling in itself. Who would have expected a hyphenated .asia domain to surpass all of the .net and .org sales in the aftermarket in any given week?

Still the .nets dominated this less competitive field overall sweeping 13 of 20 chart entries this week, including the highest sale you haven't seen yet - #4 GRC.net at $7,000 through the AfternicDLS. The #5 spot went to a .info - Medicus.info - at $6,750, also via the AfternicDLS. .Info scored a second top ten entry with Sedo's $4,000 sale of #9 File.info.

Here's how all of the Non .Com gTLDs stacked up for the week ending Jan. 16:
