Peddle to the Metal: $165,000 Sale at Sedo Sends Metal.com to Victory Lane in This Week's Aftermarket Race

Metal.com scored a runaway win in this week's domain aftermarket race, selling for $165,000 at Sedo.com to take the pole position on our new Top 20 Sales Chart. Metal.com finished more than $100,000 ahead of the next closest sale, StockPrices.com at $60,000. Sedo also sold that domain and they went on to sweep 12 of the 20 positions on our all extension leader board.

Sedo's roster included four ccTLDs that broke through the strong .com defensive line to take places on the elite list. Two of those country codes landed in the top ten; #4 Furniture.co.za (South African ccTLD) at $33,000 and #8 MO.de (German ccTLD) at $21,039

The non .com gTLDs had two representatives on the Big Board, led by #5 FuneralHome.net at $30,000. That sale, made by ProForma Inc., the sales wing of Frank Schilling's company, Name Administration, is the second biggest non .com gTLD sale of 2010 to date

By Ron Jackson

ProForma was the only other venue besides Sedo to ring up multiple chart entries, taking five places including four of the first ten. A pair or four-letter .coms helped their cause. #6 Itao.com commanded $25,000 and #7 HRSI.com drew $22,000.

Also earning chart honors this week were Moniker.com who closed the $40,000 sale of #3 FederalAid.com from their DOMAINfest Global live auction, Bido.com who banked $16,500 from the sale of #12 UDRP.com and the AfternicDLS who scored with #14 Swifty.com at $16,000.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 28:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

South Africa's .co.za extension has been making some noise in recent months and that trend continued this week when Furniture.co.za produced the leading sale on our new Country Code Top 20 Chart. That domain went for $33,000 at Sedo, a venue that swept 19 of the 20 positions on our latest weekly leader board. With the 2010 World Cup soccer championship coming to South Africa in June, that nation is going to be in a global spotlight that may add additional fuel to the .co.za fire.

The next three spots went to a trio of five-figure .de domain (German ccTLDs). You saw all of those on the all extension leader board at the top of this report. The biggest country code sale you haven't seen yet is #6 DI.de at $9,520. The .de and .co.uk (Great Britain) extensions pied up eight chart entries each.

The other countries earning chart entries this week were Italy (.it), France (.fr) and Australia (.com.au). Here is how the country code leaders stacked up for the week ending Feb. 28:

Global Contenders (Non .com gTLDs: .biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .pro & .tel)

The $30,000 sale of FuneralHome.net by ProForma Inc. tops our new Global Contenders Top 20 Chart and ranks as the second highest GC sale so far in 2010, trailing only Poker.org (admittedly trailing by a mile since Poker.org went for $1 million last week).

The FuneralHome.net sale was one of three five-figure transactions in the non .com gTLD category this week - all of which were listed in the all extension section earlier. The top GC sale you haven't seen yet is #4 Testberichte.info, a name that brought $8,160 at Sedo.

That was the only .info on the leader board. The .nets set the pace by sweeping 10 spots, followed by .org with seven. .Biz hit the daily double with a pair of names that reached the top ten; #7 Gutscheine.biz at $6,800 and #9 Denver.biz at $4,700. Both of those domains were sold by Sedo whose 12 chart entries led all venues.

Here's how all of the Global Contenders stacked up for the week ending Feb. 28:
