Party Time! Trio of Six-Figure Transactions Led By PartySupplies.com at $360,000 Top This Week's Domain Sales Chart

A pair of six-figure transactions at Moniker.com, plus another sale at that level from Sedo.com set the pace in the domain aftermarket this past week. PartySupplies.com leads the parade at $360,000, followed by Sedo's sale of Free-SMS.de at €115,000 ($162,150). HomeRun.com completed the power trio after going for $131,299 at Moniker.

It was another strong week for the country codes as they took six of the top ten positions on the all extension Top 20 Chart and 9 of 20 places overall, tying .com which also claimed 9 spots. The ccTLD leaders included #4 Hi.ru (one of the highest Russian ccTLD sales ever), sold by RU-Center for $80,600, and #6 Play.ca, sold by N49 Interactive for $34,000. N49 had another high Canadian ccTLD sale, moving Vans.ca for $25,000.

South Africa also made some noice this week with #10 Toys.co.za ringing up a $20,000 sale through Sedo. That was one of 11 charted sales for Sedo, more than any other venue.

By Ron Jackson

Two of the Top 20 were private sales including #5 Ground.com, a domain that was acquired by Aviation Media & IT GmbH for €40,000 ( $56,400). Aviation Media owns several aviation related domain names and opeates a popular German language aviation news publication at Aero.de.

The  non .com gTLDs had two representatives on the Big Board - #12 Guitars.net, sold by Rick Latona Auctions for $18,250, and DentalInsurance.org, moved at Moniker.com for $15,125.

With the second full week of 2010 sales data now in the books, we've published our first Year-To-Date Sales Charts of the new year. We started those charts off with 20 positions each and as more data comes in they will eventually grow into the Top 100 charts that we conclude each year with. The Top 100 charts for 2009 can be found here.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 17:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

The country codes rocked the house again this week with a six-figure sale and nine in the five-figure club. Free-SME.de sits atop our new Country Code Top 20 chart after that $162,150 sale at Sedo we told you about in the all extension section above. We also noted all of the ccTLD five-figure sales in that section. The top country code sale you haven't seen yet is #11 Photobox.dk (Danish cccTLD) at $9,870 via Sedo.

Sedo wound up sweeping 16 of the 20 chart entries and their roster included a couple of extensions we haven't seen a lot of on past sales list. #12 BlackCard.mx (Mexican ccTLD) brought $8,460 and #13 Booking.am (Armenian ccTLD) attracted $8,000. Sedo also put an IDN on the chart - #20 Diät.eu at $4,301.
