Seller of Topix.com Feels Like a Million Bucks as Big Sales Continue to Fuel Domain Market Boom

Though we took a week off to cover last week's T.R.A.F.F.I.C. West conference in Las Vegas, the domain market continued to barrel down the tracks at full throttle. We're going to bring you completely up to date with a double length report covering the last two weeks of sales activity. Our usual Top 20 charts will be Top 40 lists this week and the supporting cast will be twice as big as well. So pour yourself a double portion of your favorite beverage and buckle up for an invigorating ride.

It all starts at the top and that position belongs to Topix.com, a domain that went for a cool one million dollars! The Wall Street Journal confirmed that sale today, revealing that the media conglomerate that operates Topix.net acquired the .com version of the name from a Canadian company in January.

By Ron Jackson

That was the second seven-figure sale this year (joining Tandberg.com, a name that  sold for $1.5 million). The list of six-figure sales also grew considerably over the past two weeks with four more names hitting that lofty level. The largest of those was SheMale.com, a name that was auctioned off for $520,000 at Moniker.com's live auction at the Internext Expo in January, but just closed a few days ago.

Next was the #3 entry on our new chart, FreeHoroscope.com, sold for $185,259 at SnapNames.com. The plural version of that domain also changed hands at WebPassport.com for $50,000 and ranks 7th on the Big Board. Campgrounds.com and Walkers.com tied for the #4 spot at $175,000 each in a pair of private sales. Canada's Shaun Pilfold, who is building a powerhouse portfolio acquired Campgrounds.com while Frito-Lay GmbH purchased Walkers.com for their popular Walkers Crisps potato chip brand in the UK.

We saw something unusual this week - a domain that sold for less than it did the last time it was on the market. That was #13 Gary.com, a name that fetched $29,000 at Sedo.com. In September of 2006 the name had changed hands for $35,000 in a private sale.

.Com dominated the expanded leader board, sweeping 36 of the 40 positions. The remaining spots went to three country code domains and a .org. The top ccTLD was Onyx.ch (Swiss country code), a name that was sold by Stuart Lory for 55,000 Swiss Francs ($45,143) in a private sale. We also saw a one-letter ccTLD sale with #36 O.fm (Micronesia country code) going for $11,111 at Sedo. Sedo also sold the lone .org, a very nice geo domain, #39 Thailand.org, for $10,000. Sedo has more sales than any other venue with an even dozen. SnapNames also turned in another powerful performance with nine charted domains.

With $4.3 million dollars sold at Moniker's live auction at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. West last week, we will be seeing many big sales added to our charts in the weeks ahead as those domains are paid for and transferred to their new owners. Several names attracted high bids well into six figures. You can see all of the live auction winning bids here. Meanwhile a silent auction is continuing until Wednesday afternoon (March 14) that could add another seven figures to the auction sales total.

But first things first! Here's a look at the complete Top 40 for the fabulous fortnight that ended Sunday, March 11:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

Country Codes

The past two weeks have been kind to the country codes. The #1 domain on our expanded ccTLD chart was the second highest country code sales reported so far this year. That was Onyx.ch (Swiss country code), a name that sold for 55,000 Swiss francs ($45,143) in a private transaction. The top three sales on this chart all made the all-extension leader board you saw earlier and another, #4 Freud.co.uk, just missed after going for £5,000 ($9,645) at Sedo.

Venezuela's .com.ve made a very rare appearance on the top sellers chart with #6 Bancomercantil.com.ve going for €5,566 ($7,349), also at Sedo. Sedo traditionally dominates this chart and that dominance was even more pronounced this week with the chart double its normal size to accomodate two weeks worth of data. Sedo wound up sweeping 37 of the 41 entries (there was an extra slot due to at three-way tie for the final position).

Germany's .de (the world's second most popular extension, behind only .com), had more charted domains that any other country, 14 in all. Here's a look at the complete Country Code chart for the two weeks ending March 11:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of DotCom Group, LLC also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday night publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
