Quartet of Six-Figure Sales Sets the Pace in a Busy Week for the Domain Market - New gTLDs Have Their Best Week to Date

NameJet reported their January sales this week (including completed sales from the seven-figure live domain auction they staged with RightOfTheDot.com (ROTD) at the NamesCon conference), resulting in a flood of impressive sales that populate our latest charts. The top four sales on our all extension Top 20 Sales Chart all hit six figures and NameJet had a hand in three of those, including the two biggest - 417.com at $169,000 on their web platform plus Genetics.com at $150,000 via the ROTD auction. With ROTD they booked another $110,000 for #4 Penis.com (a category killing domain for the popular appendage if there ever was one!)

Earl Naegele from Next Venture LLC crashed the NameJet party at the top of the leader board with a six-figure sale of his own, banking $115,000 for #3 SPV.com. That helped fuel the ongoing trend of ultra-short domains dominating the charts as 14 of the 20 entries on the elite list were no longer than four characters.

That also held true for the top non .com sale on the elite list  - #5 88.xyz, a new gTLD domain that changed hands for $70,000 via ROTD/NameJet. NameJet was involved in 19 of the 20 charted sales - 11 made on their we platform and eight more through the ROTD auction.

Two other non .coms also made the Big Board with #9 DJ.net spinning $55,500 and #10 Web.hosting (another new gTLD) banking $52,500. The new gTLDs had their best week to date, as you will see when you get to the Non .Com gTLD Top 20 Chart later in this report - they swept 16 of the 20 entries on that list.

By Ron Jackson

The ccTLDs didn't fare as well. With the .coms sweeping 17 of the 20 entries on the top chart there was no room left at the inn. Still, the country codes booked eight five-figure sales, most of which would have made the chart in a more typical week (you will see all of those listed just below the all extension Top 20 Chart, as well as on the ccTLD Top 20 Chart later in this report).

Another ongoing trend you will note is the continued popularity of numeric and 3-letter .com domains. There are six from each category on this week's chart. Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value cash only sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.
