Domain Aftermarket Flexes Its Mid-Range Muscles With More Than 40 Five-Figure Sales This Week

This was an unusual week for the domain aftermarket. No six-figure sales were reported but a flood of solid five-figure transactions closed - enough that we could have filled two Top 20 Charts with them and still had some left over.

Sedo.com swept the first three places with FatBurners.com ($66,000), Internet.co ($40,000) and Stempel.com ($35,000). They went on to take 10 of the 20 positions on our new all extension leader board, including the week's biggest country code sale with Internet.co, a deal that also ranks among the ten biggest ccTLD sales reported so far this year.

The 11 .coms on on the elite list were joined by five ccTLDs and four non .com gTLDs. The latter category had its best outing of the year, ringing up 14 five-figure sales led by #5 Teeth.net at $30,240 via Sedo. That sale also ranks among the year's ten biggest in the non .com gTLD category.

By Ron Jackson

The AfternicDLS, NoktaDomains and Moniker/SnapNames all joined Sedo as venues that had multiple chart entries. The Afternic DLS had two top ten hits; #4 TheFit.com at $30,900 and #7 QIS.com at $27,000. NoktaDomains scored with #6 SendMoney.co.uk at $29,500 and #16 EkonomikBilet.com at $16,000. Moniker/SnapNames hit the Daily Double with a pair of .orgs that tied for the 14th spot; AutoInsuranceComparison.org and CarInsuranceCompanies.org at $18,229 each (both went to the same buyer).

Four others also earned chart honors. Boxcar.com/DomainConsultant.com sold #10 (tie) DomainWealth.com for $21,000, IDNClub.com facilitated a $20,000 deal between two their members for #12 (tie) 543.com, Gavin Durni bought #17 (tie) Education.co.za (South African ccTLD) for $15,000 in a private transaction and NetFleet.com.au sold #17 (tie) Jobs.net.au (Australian ccTLD) for $15,000

A couple of other notable sales were #12 Love.ly at $20,000 and #17 (tie) About, biz at $15,000, both handled by Sedo.  .ly is the country code for Libya and given the fact that a civil war is currently underway there, $20,000 is a sizeable bet on a ccTLD currently being operated by an unstable government. No such worries for .biz of course, but what is notable about the About.biz sale is the fact that is the third largest .biz sale of the year to date.

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, May 29:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Non .com gTLDs (.biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

The non .com gTLDs had their best outing of the year by far, piling up 14 five-figure sales. This category rarely has more than a couple of sales a week at that level. They've been on a roll the past two weeks though, with six breaking the five-figure barrier the previous week and now more than a dozen turning the trick this week.

We listed all of the five-figure sales in the all extension section at the top of this report, so the highest sale you haven't yet seen from this category is #15 on our new Non .Com gTLD Top 20 Chart - that is MSys.net at $9,388 through the AfternicDLS. Five more .nets rounded out the elite list led by #16 FijiAirlines.net at $8,800

The .nets took 10 of the 20 chart entries overall, followed by .org with 8. That left one spot each for .biz (#4 About.biz at $15,000) and .info (#13 Amor.info at $11,250). Here's how all of the Non .Com gTLD leaders stacked up for the week ending May 29:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
