GoDaddy Auctions Posts $350,000 Sale and Sedo Set to Close Another Six-Figure Blockbuster

GoDaddy Auctions staked their claim as a viable high end marketplace this past week when they closed a huge $350,000 sale of Color.com to take the pole position on our latest all extension Top 20 Sales Chart. Color.com was just part of the GoDaddy story too. They went on to ring up four of the eight biggest sales reported this week - the best performance ever from their venue.

Just before our deadline Sedo was credited with another blockbuster deal involving Ringtones.com. It was announced as a $750,000 sale, but there is some confusion surrounding the number since the seller said in the press release that they retained rights to temporarily use some sub-domains of the name and wound up with a "net cash consideration" of $575,000

By Ron Jackson

Sedo broker Dave Evanson, who engineered the deal, told me Sedo received the full $750,000 in cash before the side deal for short term use of the sub-domains was executed. He and I will get together and go over the exact details of the transaction so I can determine what price it should be charted at when the domain becomes eligible for our charts. We do not consider a sale completed until payment has been received and the domain transferred to its new owner. At the time of this writing, the domain was still titled to Sedo's escrow service.

Sedo again took more positions on the leader board than any other venue, claiming eight places on the elite list. Four of those were earned with .net domains, led by #3 Clothing.net at $40,000. UpMarketURLs.com gave the .nets a fifth representative on the Big Board by selling #4 Holland.net for Michael Berkens for $32,000. Michael also logged a Top 10 sale from his own aftermarket venue - MostWantedDomains.com. That was #9 MakeUpYourMind.com at $17,500

The AfternicDLS and Moniker/SnapNames both had multiple chart entries this week. Moniker/SnapNames scored with #11 BargainHunt.com ($15,000) and #20 Business4Business.com ($12,641) while The AfternicDLS banked $13,200 for #18 Shop1.com and $12,800 for #19 Nextware.com.

The country codes were represented by a pair of .co.uk domains. #10 Ocean.co.uk attracted $16,195 at DomainLore.co.uk while #16 Files.co.uk fetched $13,430. The .coms again dominated though, piling up 13 of the 20 chart entries. The .com cause was helped by the $55,000 sale of #2 VideoProduction.com at MediaOptions.com

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 5:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Global Contenders (Non .com gTLDs: .biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

After having no five-figure sales reported last week, the non .com gTLDs bounced back nicely this week with five sales at that level. The top one, Clothing.net at $40,000 via Sedo ranks among the year's 10 biggest sales in this category.

We showed you all of those five-figure sales in the all extension section earlier, so the top sale on our new Global Contenders Top 20 Chart that you haven't seen yet is #6 Strompreise.net at $6,251 through Sedo. Sedo went on to sweep 12 of the 20 chart entries.

NameJet took four spots on the leader board with their team led by #8 Alien.org at $5,800. The AfternicDLS also had another solid outing with three charted sales topped by #9 BBI.net at $5,500

The .nets dominated this week, taking the first seven places on the chart and 14 or 20 overall. The remaining six openings were all filled by .orgs. Here's how all of the Global Contenders stacked up for the week ending Dec. 5:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.
