Year's Biggest Sale To Date - Flying.com at $1.1 Million - Soars to Top of Our Weekly Sales Chart

The past week was a very solid one for domain sales, led by the year's biggest sale to date and a trio of six-figure deals. Flying.com set the pace after changing hands for $1,100,000 in a private transaction. The buyer, UsedAirplanes.com, detailed the acquisition in a press release today (April 7). In addition to leading our latest weekly Top 20 Sales Chart, Flying.com nudges Poker.org ($1 million) out of the top spot on our Year-to-Date Top 100 Chart.

A nice geodomain - LongIsland.com - occupies the #2 spot on this week's Big Board after being brokered for $370,000 in a deal handled by RickLatona.com. Two more six-figure sales at Sedo.com occupy the next two spots on the elite list; Pilot.com at $300,000 and Nasty.com at $200,000. Nasty.com had sold for the exact same price (also at Sedo.com) back in July 2006.

Sedo went on to sweep 11 of the 20 positions on the elite list including a nice 3-letter .com sale with #5 MEC.com at $99,000. Sedo also accounted for three of the five ccTLD sales on the all-extension leader board. One of those was an IDN - #18 Schönheitsoperation.ch (Swiss country code) at $12,060.

By Ron Jackson

The top ccTLD sale was #8 Call.me (country code for Montenegro), a name purchased by DomainInvest.lu for €20,000 ($26,800) in a private transaction. A press release we received announcing the purchase said, "Call.Me will become one of the first virtual telephone booths. Call.Me will enable visitors to call online from the website www.call.me any landline or mobile phone worldwide without having to install any software."

With .coms piling up 15 of the 20 chart entries, the non .com gTLDs were shut out this week. There were no five-figure sales in that category.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, April 4:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

For the second week in a row, the country code category posted a half dozen solid five-figure sales. All of those were noted in the all extension section at the top of this report.  The highest ccTLD sale you haven't seen yet is Aegypten.eu at $6,566 via Sedo, good enough to take the #7 position on our weekly Country Code Top 20 Chart

Sedo went on to sweep 17 of the 20 entries on the ccTLD leader board. NetFleet.com.au was the only venue to buck the Sedo tide as they sold GraphicDesign.com.au (Australian ccTLD) for $5,520

Germany's .de extension had the most chart entries with seven, followed by .co.uk (Great Britain) and .eu (European Union) with three each. Austria's .at also had multiple entries with two charted domains.

Global Contenders (Non .com gTLDs: .biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

This was not a good week for the Global Contenders as the non .com gTLD category didn't have a single five-figure sale reported. That dearth of high dollar sales allowed AX.org to float to the top of the Global Contenders Top 20 Chart with a $7,650 sale at Sedo. NameJet claimed the next two spots with Flip.net ($5,800) and HealthInternetwork.org ($5,210)

The .nets had the most chart entries with ten, including an IDN at #7 - Reisebüro.net at $4,163 via Sedo, a venue that swept 11 of the 20 chart entries. The .orgs had eight charted domains with the remaining two openings going to a pair of .infos led by #5 (tie) Schmerz.info at $4,824.
