Brakes at $250,000 to Top This Week's Sales Chart - South African
ccTLD Takes #2 Spot
|
Stein Holdings, the same company
that paid $250,000 for Boating.com to lead last week's
Top 20 Sales Chart, is on top again this week after paying
the same amount to acquire Biking.com through the AfternicDLS.
Beta websites are already online for both domains.
The biggest South African ccTLD
sale reported to date, Fly.co.za at $65,000, takes the
#2 spot having just closed after being auctioned off in Rick
Latona's live auction at the T.R.A.F.F.I.C.
Las Vegas conference last month. Gavin Durni from
the company that sold Fly.co.za, Durni Companies LLC, told me
that the South African country code has started seeing a lot more
sales activity over the past year. Just last month Toys.co.za
hit the top ten on our weekly chart after a $20,000 sale.
Another ccTLD landed in the first five
this week - two-letter German country code WO.de at €20,000
($27,600) via Sedo.com.
Three more ccTLDs (another .de, a British .co.uk and a
French .fr), also made the all extension Top 20 Chart. Sedo
sold all three of those as well and wound up sweeping 14 of the 20
chart entries.

While the country codes continued to show
strength, .com reasserted its dominance by claiming 14
positions on the Big Board, including 8 of the first 10. YummyNames.com
had one of the highest of those with #3 (tie) LightSwitch.com
at $33,000.
SnapNames
was the only venue other than Sedo to have multiple chart entries.
They hit the trifecta with a pair of top ten domains; #7
FitnessTrainer.com ($20,888) and #10 StockReports.com
($16,528) and the only non .com gTLD on the elite list,
#19 Necklace.net at $10,145.

Keep in mind that these are the highest
value sales that have been reported to us in the
past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool,
not a complete list documenting ALL high
value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce
because many sales are kept private at the insistence of
buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the
accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.
|
For
the many newcomers entering the domain
industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market.
If you do not understand why specific domain names command the
prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases.
We highly recommend that you do some basic research before
you buy anything! As a starting point we have
built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes
Five five-figure sales set the pace for the country
codes this week, with Fly.co.za leading the pack
following completion of that $65,000 sale through Latonas.com
that we told you about at the top of this report. The top five
ccTLDs all made the all extension leader board you saw earlier. The
top country code sales you haven't seen yet are the pair that tied
for #6 at $8,380 each - Accelerate.eu and EN.de.
Sedo handled both of those sales and went on to sweep 20 of the 22
chart entries (the extra slots came from a three-way tie for the
final position).
As it usually does, Germany's powerful .de
extension accounted for the most chart entries, placing 10
names on the elite list. Great Britain's .co.uk was next with
five including a pair that hit the top ten; #3 Site.co.uk
($11,070) and #8 HighHeels.co.uk ($7,065).
The other countries represented this week were Austria
(.at) and France (.fr) with two entries apiece, plus South
Africa (.co.za), the European Union (.eu) and Australia
(.com.au) with one each.

country code leaders stacked

The .nets reigned on the Global

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies,
private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale
made through any channel. To contribute information and help make
this column better, just drop a note to [email protected].
We truly appreciate the industry leading
companies who share their sales information
with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current
domain values. Richard
Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help
in collecting data for these sales
reports each week.
Every Tuesday night or Wednesday
morning we publish the highest reported domain name
sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us
their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that
information and write this article to give
you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.
Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain
Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
