Despite
Competition from New gTLDs .ORG Continues to
Grow with Registrations Passing the 10.4 Million
Mark
|
When
the new gTLDs
began arriving in the first half of
this year a lot of people predicted
that the new competition would hurt
the original non .com gTLDs, .net
and .org (and others like
.info and .biz that
arrived later) more than .com,
which remains the gold standard. So,
it was interesting to see that
|
|
the Public
Interest Registry, who
administers the .org extension,
reported continued growth in
their latest semi-annual Dashboard
report that was released
Wednesday.
|
The
report said .org finished
2Q-2014 with 10,428,027 global
registrations, a 1.4% increase
over the past 12 months. That is
certainly not meteoric growth but in
the face of so much new competition
(several hundred new gTLDs have
already been released) it is still
respectable. Of course, there are
hundreds more new gTLDs coming
(including a couple PIR will operate
themselves, .NGO and .ONG,
alongside three IDNs they have
already introduced) and the public
will presumably become more familiar
with new gTLDs in general - so
maintaining growth isn't going to
get any easier for traditional
TLDs.

PIR
CEO Brian Cute |
Still
PIR has reason for optimism.
.Org, used by many of the
world's most widely known and
respected non-profit
organizations, is a strong, almost
universally recognized TLD,
with a loyal user base. That
is reflected in .org's solid 74%
renewal rate (that jumps
to nearly 85% after a
name has been held for three
years).
Brian
Cute, CEO of Public
Interest Registry, said
“After three decades,
we’re thrilled to see that
.org remains the domain of
choice for organizations
serving the public interest.
In the past few years, the
.org domain hit 10 million
domains under management and
experienced rapid adoption in
several international markets.
We’re optimistic that in the
year ahead, more and more organizations,
individuals and companies
around the globe will turn to
.org to share their passions,
ideas and causes.” |
