Silver.com
Strikes Gold - Closes 2012 Sales Season in One of the Year's Three Biggest Deals
The 2012 domain sales season has
come to a close - and it ended with a bang as Silver.com
changed hands for $875,000 in the year's third biggest sale
(our final 2012 Top 100 Chart
is here). The owners of precious metals dealer JM
Bullion bought the domain from a private seller in a
deal brokered by WebsiteProperties.com
that took only a week to negotiate.
JM Bullion CEO Mike Wittmeyer told
us, "We are thrilled to announce our acquisition of Silver.com.
Since our company's inception in late 2011, we have experienced
tremendous growth, with sales projected in the nine figures for
2013. Over the next few months, we will be developing Silver.com as
a parallel brand to JM Bullion, offering Silver.com clients
the same outstanding customer service, pricing, and delivery times
that JM Bullion clients currently receive."
As most of you know, the offices of many
of the sales venues that provide sales data to us were closed last
week for Christmas, so there was no column last week. Most
didn't re-open until after New Year's Day, so this week's column
also had to be pushed back a couple of days to get all of the sales
reports from the past two weeks in. To bring you completely up to
date this will be a double length column covering all of the
notable sales reported in the final two weeks of the 2012 sales
season. Our usual Top 20 Charts have also been expanded to
40 positions each to make room for the double dose of data.

That Silver.com sale was followed by two
more six figure sales - StockPhoto.com at $250,000
through Flippa.com (the largest domain only sale in the
company's history) and NYE.com at $175,500 via NameJet.com.
A pair of Afternic.com
sales - Treadmill.com at $81,250 and WeWatch.com
at $65,000 - rounded out the top five on our all extension Top
40 Sales Chart.
There are a lot of impressive sales on the
Big Board, especially considering that the past two business weeks
were both shortened considerably by major holidays and that
no sales are included from one of the industry's leading aftermarket
platforms,
DomainNameSales.com, as they didn't get their results for
the past two weeks in to us.
The .coms dominated the leader
board, sweeping 31 of the 41 positions including the first 14
in a row (the extra spot resulted from a tie for the
final position).
The ccTLDs and the non .com
gTLDs each had five entries. Two of the country code
sales reached the top half of the elite list - #14 ContactBank.ru
at $23,000 via Sedo
and #18 (tie) Beats.us at $18,000 through GoDaddyAuctions.
The non .com gTLDs, led by #22 Cancer.info ($16,005 at
GoDaddy Auctions), all landed on the second half of the chart.
Here is how the
sales leaders stacked up for the two weeks ending Sunday, December

Keep in mind that these are the highest
value cash only sales that have been reported to us in the
past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool,
not a complete list documenting ALL high
value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce
because many sales are kept private at the insistence of
buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the
accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.
Forthe many newcomers entering the domain
industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market.
If you do not understand why specific domain names command the
prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases.
We highly recommend that you do some basic research beforeyou buyanything! As a starting point we have
built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
There were four more five-figure sales just
off the chart, with Sedo accounting for three of those - Hot.co,
Iceland.us and LiquidRhythm.com, with each one selling
for $10,000. Also, Amr Mahmoud sold Reviews.me
for $10,000 in a private transaction after buying the name for
just $1,120 in November 2011.
