2019 Domain Sales Season Ends with a Canadian ccTLD Beating All Comers to Win the Year's Last Chart Race

We're back, refreshed an ready to go after an enjoyable holiday break. I hope you're all feeling the same way and wish you all the best in the new year ahead. On the domain sales front we have a lot of catching up to do. Our last weekly report was on December 18. Christmas Day was one week later and New Year's Day one week after that. With so many people out of their offices (including us) the flow of sales data didn't fully re-open until this week, but now we have it all in hand and, in this report, will bring you completely up to date on all of the top sales from the past three weeks.

The previously unreported data covers the final two weeks of December and the first week of January, so this will serve as the last chart of the 2019 sales season. The December sales that qualified for our final 2019 Top 100 charts have been entered on those leader boards. The January sales that are high enough to qualify will go onto new 2020 Year to Date Charts that will be next started next week (January 15).

Considering we have three weeks worth of new sales data in hand it was a but of a surprise to see a Canadian ccTLD beat out all other extensions, including the .coms to take the top spot on the leader board. Peter Maxymych from eMall.ca took the trophy with his company's CAD $100,000 (USD $77,000) sale of Ticket.ca to the operators of Billets.ca. That also ranks among the five biggest country code sales of 2019.

By Ron Jackson

Sedo took the next two spots on the elite list with Touhou.com at $75,000 and an unusually large 3-letter .net sale - OGE.net at $62,000. That gave the latter sale a spot among 2019's five biggest non .com gTLD sales. The .coms rounded out the first five with #4 Novo.com changing hands in a private transaction for $52,999 and Sedo moving #5 Pareto.com for $39,000. Those helped the .coms pile up 14 of the 20 chart entries.

Uniregistry helped the .com cause with #6 Kibbutz.com at $30,000 and three others, but they gave the non .com gTLDs and the ccTLDs a hand as well. Uni teamed up with New.life to sell #7 Open.money (a new gTLD) for $25,000 and moved #19 (tie) Responsible.co.uk on their own for $15,000.

The non .com gTLDs have tended to lag the field in recent years but they had a great outing this time around, filling five places on the leader board, including two that went through NameJet - #8 WeedCenter.org at $23,100 and #12 Models.net at $19,906.

NameJet's sister site, SnapNames, also earned chart honors with their $15,999 sale of #16 Pacemakers.com. AbdulBasit.com took a turn in the spotlight too after banking $15,888 for #17 Digital-Identity.com.

In addition to all of these current sales, three big historical sales also came to light over the holidays. DomainNameWire's reporting on a legal battle among related co-owners at Future Media Architects revealed that the dispute led to some premier names being sold off in 2014 including 333.com at $750,000 and Bit.com at $300,000. As a result, those sales have been added to the 2014 Top 100 Chart in our Archive where 333.com becomes the #14 sale that year and Bit.com is tied for #27. George Kirikos, who gave me some additional background on the FMA sales also uncovered a $325,000 sale of Stage.com in 2015 while going through an SEC filing. That sale has been added to our 2015 Top 100 Chart where it is now #22 for that year. Our thanks, as always to George, who has brought dozens of these previously undiscovered sales to light over the years.

Now back to the immediate job at hand. Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the three weeks ending Sunday, January 5, 2020:

The highest sale in this group that you haven't seen yet is #3 on our latest Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart. That is Sedo's $7,280 sale of CryptoPay.de.

Sedo went on to sweep 14 of the 20 chart entries and they rounded out the first five with Farmy.nl and Minipu.de at $6,720 each. Uniregistry took five places with their quintet being led by #7 eScooter.co.uk at $6,000.

Non .com gTLDs (.net, .org and others, including new gTLDs)
