Travelzoo Books Year's Biggest Domain Sale to Date Banking $2.89 Million for Fly.com

In the biggest domain sale reported so far in 2017, a $2.89 million dollar deal for Fly.com has come to light thanks to George Kirikos who found the transaction in TravelZoo's 1Q-2017 SEC filing (the sale is noted on page 6 of the filing). TravelZoo originally acquired the domain for $1.76 million (as we reported in 2009) so the sale netted them a handsome profit of more than $1 million (only the domain name was included in the sale to an undisclosed buyer and WhoIs privacy continues to  shielded their identity). As George noted when he sent me the information, the sale is further proof that a quality domain name is an asset rather than an expense.

The Fly.com sale is more than $1 million higher than the previous 2017 chart leader - 01.com, a name that VIP Brokerage sold for $1,820,000 in February - and is, or course, the runaway winner on our latest weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart. Sedo filled the next two slots with Piech.com at $79,000 and SeaCapital.com at $49,000

RightOfTheDot.com and NameJet.com released a large batch of completed sales from their live and online domain auction at the 2017 NamesCon conference for the first time. Two of those sales rounded out the first five with DPT.com going for $42,000 and Beginning.com for $29,000. Their sales filled eight entries on the leader board including the week's biggest ccTLD sale - #15 (tie) 89.tv at $9,000

By Ron Jackson

Sedo had the only other country code sale on the Big Board - #20 GSHS.co.kr at $7,000, as well as the only non .com gTLD on the elite list - #14 Carts.net at $9,850.

The .coms swept everything else. The .com cause was helped by Tuoky.com's $23,000 sale of #7 (tie) QEL.com, DomainMarket's $12,500 sale of #11 Harvest Properties.com and DomainsNext.com's $8,500 sale of FC8.com.

Keep in mind that these are the highest value cash only sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.
