Another Short .Com Tops This Week's Domain Sales Chart But This One is Different

We've become used to seeing short .com domains at the top of our weekly domain sales chart, especially of the 3-letter or 3-number variety. However, 3-character .coms (a mix of letters and numbers) rarely land that high. Those domains do have value but seeing one go as high as HG7.com did this week at SnapNames.com - $60,001 - is almost unheard of. While you will likely be surprised by the price, you won't be surprised to hear that the domain went to China where so many other short .coms have migrated over the past couple of years.

The runner-up spot on our latest all extension Top 20 Sales Chart went to Sedo for their $45,000 sale of Defiant.com. Short .coms filled the rest of the first five as well. BQDN.com sold #3 DTP.com for $44,000 and #4 2021.com for $43,000 while SnapNames scored again with #5 Xitong.com at $38,006.

The next four spots on the Big Board all went to non .com gTLDs with two new gTLDs in that quartet. Sedo had the top sale in that group with #6 Apuestas.net ("bets" in Spanish) going for €29,000 ($30,740). Following in order were OP.media ($20,500 at Synergy.media), Act.Today (a Magnum Domains listing that sold for $20,000 at DomainAgents.com) and MobileHomes.org ($18,800 at Sedo).

By Ron Jackson

Broker Sharjil Saleem completed a trio of .com sales at $18,000 apiece that rounded out the top half of the elite list. Those helped the .coms sweep 15 of the 20 chart entries. Michael Mann's DomainMarket.com also contributed to the .com charge with #15 StrongRoots.com at $13,600 and #18 DestinationsInternational.com at $9,888. Mann told us he bought the first name for $200 in 2012 and got the latter one for $69 in 2011.

The ccTLDs were limited to just one chart entry this week. That went to Sedo for #19 G.cx at $8,368.

This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.
