Year's Biggest Domain Sale to Date Tops This Week's Sales Chart at $1.2 Million

For the past two months TP.com has reigned as the year's biggest domain sale after going for $929,000 at NameJet - but now there's a new King of The Hill. In 2016's first reported seven-figure sale, we learned that Tribune Publishing (publishers of the Los Angeles Times) bought LA.com for $1.2 million in a transaction that we confirmed was brokered by GoDaddy. When I say "reported sale" it wasn't a case of the company announcing the purchase, it was a case of George Kirikos uncovering the sale while going through an SEC filing (see page 14) - the same way he has dug up many other blockbuster sales that would have likely gone unnoticed otherwise.

In fact, that wasn't the only big deal George uncovered this week. In another filing involving the acquisition of Omni Prepaid, LLC and its subsidiaries GiftCards.com, LLC and OmniCard, LLC by Blackhawk Network Holdings for over $103 million the buyer said they thought the domain name GiftCards.com, that was part of the assets of the acquired businesses, was worth $11 million. As it was part of a larger transaction involving established businesses we can't chart it but it a number obviously worthy of note.

By Ron Jackson

That is still not all - as Elliot Silver wrote about at DomainInvesting.com, George learned from a GoDaddy SEC filing that they had acquired a portfolio of domains for $42 million. As always we appreciate the work George has done and continues to do in bringing such important transactions to light, giving us all more insight into current domain valuations.

Returning to this week's charted sales, the runner-up slot on our latest all extension Top 20 Sales Chart was shared by a .com and a new gTLD. Boardroom.com and Web.hosting changed hands for $75,000 each. Domain King Rick Schwartz and Michael Berkens joined forces to buy Boardroom.com in Sedo's latest GreatDomains auction and Sai Pola's DomainPros.com sold Web.hosting for a profit of more than $22,000 after picking it up in a live auction at NamesCon in January for $52,500.

Two more new gTLD sales rounded out the first five with #4 S.club going for $37,984 on AliBaba's Ali Auction platform (TaoBao) in China and Internet.travel being moved for $11,400 by Isaac Paton's PixelDreams.es.

The ccTLDs got into the act too with five charted sales, four of which landed in the top ten. The country code crew was led by two Sedo sales that tied for #6 - Mortgages.ae and Uncle.co - at $10,000 apiece

All told, in a very diverse week, the .coms piled up 10 chart entries while the new gTLDs and ccTLDs landed 5 spots each. Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, May 8, 2016:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value cash only sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

Country Codes

As we noted above the ccTLDs were led by that quintet of sales that qualified for the all extension leader board with Mortgaes.ae and Uncle.co leading the pack at $10,000 each via Sedo. They wound up sweeping 17 of 20 positions on our latest weekly Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart, including nine of the first ten.

Golem.eu landed the one spot on the top half of the elite list that Sedo missed (and the highest sale in this group that you haven't seen yet) with #6 Riverbank.eu at $5,129. The other two spots that Sedo did not claim went to Park.io for #14 Tagged.io at $3,525 and DomainLore.co.uk for #20 BroadbandComparison.co.uk at $1,296.

Germany's .de won the extension race with four chart entries. No other TLD has more than two. Here is how the country code leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, May 8, 2016:
