Monster $8 Million Sale from 2015 Confirmed - Giant .Net Sale Tops This Week's Chart

I was away last week covering the 2016 NamesCon conference in Las Vegas so we have a double length column for you this week to bring you up to date on all sales reported since my last report January 6.

While I was at NamesCon I was able to confirm the price paid in two huge sales from previous years for the first time. Last June there were reports that We.com was sold for an undisclosed amount. In August James Iles wrote in a NamePros post that the domain was sold for $8 million. We were unable to independently verify that at the time, but at NamesCon I connected with an unimpeachable source who confirmed James' number was correct - $8 million - making it the 2nd biggest sale of 2015. We have now added it to our 2015 Top 100 Chart as a result.

We also learned that in 2014 the Chinese ccTLD domain 123.cn was sold for $400,000, making it the 2nd biggest country code sale of that year. We have added it to that year's Top 100 to reflect the new information.

Now let's get to the biggest sales reported over the past two weeks. Again the highest one came to our attention at NamesCon where we learned from veteran domain investor John Deneen that he sold Recovery.net for $200,000. That is a huge number for a non .com gTLD sale - in fact it is bigger than any reported sale in that category in 2015.

By Ron Jackson

The latest sales also made it readily apparent that the desire to acquire ultra-short domains remains unabated. The next three spots or our all extension Top 20 Sales Chart went to 3-letter .coms. Sedo logged all three of those sales, picking up $99,750 for AWM.com, $85,000 for WFV.com and $71,482 for HSZ.com. They rounded out the first five with an even shorter domain - 7.gg at $44,145 (.gg is a seldom seen ccTLD representing Bailiwick of Guernsey, including the islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou and Lihou).

The short numeric domains that were so popular with Chinese buyers last year also continue to draw significant money. Sedo sold #6 9208.com for $32,500 while GGRG.com sold 3141.com for $32,000.

The .coms piled up 14 of the 20 chart entries. SnapNames helped the cause with #11 (tie) LeatherGloves.com at $20,000 while GenericDomainMarket.com added reinforcement with #15 DesignInc.com at $14,000.

The ccTLDs also had a solid outing with five names on the Big Board including Nidoma.com's $28,353 sale of #9 Limoncello.it. The non .com gTLDs were limited to one entry - but made it count with the week's biggest sale in Recovery.net.

Here is how the sales leaders stacked up for the two weeks ending Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016:

This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.
