Short Domains Continue Dominance - 12 of This Week's Top 20 Sales Are Four Characters or Less

As regular readers know 3-letter .coms have been on a tear this year. Fewer than usual were reported this week with only two on our all extension Top 20 Sales Chart, but brevity remained very highly valued. A dozen names on the Big Board ranged from just two to four characters to the left of the dot.

Mera.com led the way after domain pioneer Garry Chernoff sold that domain for $132,500 in a private transaction. In another six-figure sale, DomainHoldings moved Adopting.com for $125,000 (showing yet again that it's hard to go wrong with one-word .coms).

Sedo took the next two spots with FBET.com at $54,500 and MyFood.com at $33,500. FBET.com was a very impressive flip - that domain had been purchased just last month (also at Sedo) for only $12,099 - allowing the buyer to more than quadruple their money in just a few weeks time.

By Ron Jackson

The week's top 3-letter.com sale rounded out the first five. That was Bill McClure's sale of WJM.com for $33,000 in a private transaction. Those are Bill's initials but the founder of Coffee.club has a great back-up - McClure.com - that made it a little easier to part with the acronym.

Not all of those short domains were .coms. Two were .nets, led by Sedo's $29,500 sale of #6 BD.net. That is also the biggest .net sale reported so far this year. The other .net was also just two letters with #17 Hi.net going for $15,000 (also at Sedo).

The ccTLDs got into the short domain act too with Sedo selling CZ.cc and Joy.eu for $10,900 each, placing them in a tie for the final spot on the elite list. Two more country codes domains made the leader board, both names that went against the flow by being longer and selling for more money. Sedo moved #8 Astrology.tv for $27,250 and NoktaDomains sold #10 EasyFundraising.co.uk for $24,000

The .coms still swept 14 of the 20 chart entries and had eight of those short name sales including eNaming.com's $28,000 sale of #7 LILV.com. Two from that group were numeric domains - #9 8255.com ($26,500 at Sedo) and #13 5227.com ($18,000 at DomainsNext.com).

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the two weeks ending Sunday, May 24:
