3-Digit .Com Commands Over 200K to Top This Week's Sales Chart - 11 of First 12 Entries are 3 Characters or Less

It's the same old song but it's a tune that owners of ultra-short domain names never get tired of hearing. That category continued to rule our all extension Top 20 Sales Chart this week with 11 of the first 12 entries (and 14 of 20 overall) running 3 characters or less left of the dot. Eight of those were ever popular 3-letter .coms but the biggest of all banked on numbers with 701.com commanding $205,001 at NameJet in another in a long line of great numeric domain sales this year (four of the six biggest sales reported so far this year have been 3-digit .coms).

The runner up spot on this week's leader board went to the only domain in the top ten that was more than three characters long. That was Rankings.com, a name that Pedro Romero sold through the Above.com Marketplace for $100,000.

The week's biggest non .com sales (both representing new gTLD .top) tied for the #3 slot with 6.top and M.top changing hands for $93,600 each through the Jiangsu Bangning registrar in China. The extension is doing well in that country and now has more than 900,000 total registrations, second only to .xyz among new gTLDs.

By Ron Jackson

ZCN.com rounded out the first five with a $78,077 sale at NameJet followed by three more 3-letter .com sales at the same venue. Joining them on the top half of the elite list was #9 C.Club, sold for $50,000 in an Eachnic.com auction, and #10 RE.net at $49,000 via NameJet. That gave the non .com gTLDs four spots overall but the .coms swept everything else, piling up 16 chart entries and leaving the ccTLDs empty handed.

SnapNames contributed to the .com onslaught with one of the few entries that stretched beyond 3-characters in #13 Changyu.com. Sedo had two others with #17 AirFashion.com ($29,000) and #18 Xpose.com ($27,500) and IndusDomains.com chipped in with FLIO.com at $25,000 (though at just four letters that one wasn't "long" by anyone's standard).

This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.  (2003 to Now)

There were 16 more five-figure sales off the chart led by Sol Orwell's $24,000 purchase of SJO.com at Heritage Auctions. Sol, a successful domain investor turned top notch developer who was profiled in our current Cover Story, promptly turned SJO.com into his personal website.

NameJet has seven more sales at this level including GXV.com at $23,000. That was a great flip for the seller who had picked it up last February for just $8,450 (also at NameJet) - an example of how quickly three-letter .com prices have escalated this year. NameJet added $19,500 for 9472.com, $18,400 for BBOO.com and $15,100 for 259999.com. Also on their list was JohnDoe.com ($14,600), Baza.com ($14,100) and Jami.com ($10,300).

DomainHoldings.com collected $22,000 for StayFit.com, Flippa fetched $21,500 for Bart.com and Sedo sold six more, four of those .coms -  PerfectCo.com for $11,500, Fisico.com for $10,500 plus Avexis.com and Imagic.com at $10,000 apiece. They also moved two ccTLDs at this level - Cam.tv at $13,000 and Cool.it at $11,000.

Non .com gTLDs (.net, .org, .biz, .info & others, including new gTLDs)

The boom in the China market has done wonders for the Non .Com gTLDs. This group has trailed the ccTLDs in annual dollar sales volume reported to us for several years now but demand from Chinese buyers for ultra short domains in .net and a few of the new gTLDs has given the category new life. That was never more apparent than this week with 6.top and M.top booking $93,600 each to lead our latest Non .com gTLD Top 20 Sales Chart (a pair of sales that also rank among the year's 10 biggest in this group).

.CLUB has also benefited in a big way from Chinese interest, piling up a dozen chart entries this week led by #3 C.Club at $50,000. That domain, like many of their others on the leader board, was sold in a premium .CLUB domain auction staged by Chinese registrar Eachnic.com.

Short .nets also continue to do very well and those produced half of the top six sales, led by RE.net at $49,000 via NameJet. Still, all of those solid auction sales gave .CLUB an easy win in the extension race (a competition usually won by the .nets).  Here's how all of the Non .Com gTLD leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected]. We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
