Demand for 3-Letter .Coms Continues to Soar - They Take 14 of 20 Entries on This Week's Top Sales Chart

We've been watching the demand (and prices) for 3-letter .coms steadily rise for several months now and this week the frenzy reached a fever pitch with 14 of the 20 entries on our latest all extension Top 20 Sales Chart coming from that category. While any three-letter combo has good value - when it is a three-letter word - the price expands even further. Such was the case with this week's top sale - Due.com - a domain that Flippa.com sold for $130,000.

The 13 other 3-letter .coms on the leader board were all acronyms with the sales prices ranging from $33,700 for NameJet's sale of #5 NLF.com down to the $15,619 paid for #17 NQJ.com, also at NameJet.

A lot of this week's 3-letter domains included letters like J, K, Q, W, X and Z that were once regarded by many as less letters because fewer English words begin with them than most other letters in the alphabet (thus limiting the number of potential buyers for an acronym containing those letters). However, with China emerging as one of the top (if not the top) market for short .com domains that is changing rapidly as words (and place names) with these letters are widely used and very popular there.

By Ron Jackson

While 3-letter domains stole the spotlight, three names that were slightly longer landed among the first five on the Big Board, including one that hit six figures. That was Sedo's sale of #2 Mercari.com at $108,000. Sedo also sold #3 SportsMarket.com for $65,000 and moved #4 Lab360.com on behalf of seller DomainProducts.com for $40,000.

Like 3-letter .coms, short  numeric domains have also increased substantially in value - again largely driven by the Chinese market. This week NameJet sold #19 1303.com for $14,545 and #20 8316.com for $13,345.

All of these short .com sales sucked all of the air out of the market for chart contenders from other categories, giving the .coms a clean sweep of all 20 chart positions.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, April 5:
