Make It A Double! TWO Multi-Million Dollar Sales Take Over Top Spots on Our Weekly and YTD Sales Charts

By now most of you have probably read our latest Cover Story that came out last week featuring Michael Castello's astonishing account of  how he turned a free domain name - Whisky.com - into a $3.1 million payday (if you didn't read the story, which has already become one of the most widely read stories in the 11-year history of DN Journal, do yourself a favor and read it now).

The Cover Story came out the day after our last weekly sales report, so Whisky.com enters the charts for the first time this week, with the Castello Brothers sale topping both this week's all extension Top 20 Sales Chart and our 2014 Year to Date Top Sales Chart. Whisky.com also became the first seven-figure sale reported this year.

While Whisky.com is the first to hit seven figures it wasn't the last as we learned of a second blockbuster at that level this week. George Hong of Guta.com who has been helping us keep an eye on the Asian market, relayed the news that the Chairman and CEO of Gamewave Group Limited, Mr. Hong Yu, announced the purchase of Youxi.com ("games" in Chinese) for $2,430,000 (CNY 15,000,000) Tuesday (March 4).  Gamewave's website describes the company as "China's largest web game provider, the leader of the Chinese web game industry and the professional provider of interactive entertainment services."

By Ron Jackson

Those two seven-figure sales were part of a .com onslaught that gave the world's most popular extension 17 of the 20 entries on this week's Big Board. Clearly, if the massive wave of new gTLDs now coming ashore is scaring off .com buyers, we're not seeing it yet. In fact no non .com gTLDs qualified for the Big Board this week (and no reported sales from that category - which includes traditional favorites .net and .org - reached even five figures). The three spots .com did not claim all went to ccTLDs, led by the $26,250 sale of #4 Bonus.ca by DomainNames.ca. The others were #15 Offertes.nl ($15,070) and #19 LaptopScreen.co.uk ($13,600), with both of those sales handled by Sedo

Sedo also wound up with the most chart entries overall, taking eight spots on the elite list, including #3 with Footmarseille.com at $34,250. NameJet filled out the first five with #5 eCoupon.com at $23,388, one of four charted domains for them. Go Daddy/Afternic also staked out four slots with a group led by #7 LaughOutLoud.com at $20,800. In a notable private transaction, Chris Thompson of  SpeakLanguages.co.uk acquired #10 SpeakLanguages.com for his company for $20,000

One other note before we go to the leader board. George Kirikos has turned up yet another major previously unreported sale while going through company reports. He was able to determine that AO.com sold for an estimated $550,000 to $575,000 last year. The exact amount couldn't be pinpointed because the company (AO World PLC) logged the purchase of two domains under one total - about $594,000 at the pound/dollar conversion rate when the 2013 sale was made. Though not named, the other domain was believed to be AO.co.uk as it changed hands at about the same time. The latter name likely cost under $50,000, leaving the 550-575k balance for AO.com. While we can't chart those, George has added another important piece to the historical domain sales picture, which we always appreciate.

Now, returning to the latest sales activity, here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, March 2:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value cash only sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Country Codes

For the second week in a row, a Canadian ccTLD leads our weekly Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart. Last week it was Dental.ca at $22,600. This week it is Bonus.ca at $26,250 in a sale made by DomainNames.ca (they also sold Dental.ca last week, but made that sale through Sedo).

That was one of four four-figure ccTLD sales reported this week (all listed in the all extension section above). The highest sale from this category that you haven't seen yet is #5 Dao.cn at $9,316 via Sedo, who swept 18 of the 22 chart entries (the extra spots resulted from a three-way tie for the final position).

Germany's .de won the extension race with five charted sales. Great Britain's .co.uk had three while Colombia's .co and France's .fr had two each. Here is how the country code leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, March 2:

Non .com gTLDs (.biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

As I noted at the top of the report, this was another tough week for the Non .Com gTLDs. For the second week in a row no sales reach five figures in this category. That left the door open for TFI.net to take the top spot in our latest weekly Non .Com gTLD Top 20 Sales Chart with an $8,804 sale through Go Daddy/Afternic.

Go Daddy/Afternic swept the first  three spots on the leader board and piled up 12 of the 20 chart entries overall. Their haul included #2 HorseRacing.tips at $8,200 (nice price for a newly released gTLD) and #3 Outages.net at $7,500

Rounding out the first five were #4 BestCasino.info ($7,050 at Sedo) and #5 Financing.net ($6,655 ay NameJet).

The .nets easily won the extension race with 10 chart entries. The .orgs followed with 6 leaving two spots for .info and one each for .tips and .today. Here's how all of the Non .Com gTLD leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, March 2:
