East Meets West: How the First Domain Summit Asia Conference Opened Doors on Both Sides of the Globe

Shortly after Domain Summit Founder Helmuts Meskonis staged the 4th annual edition of the London-based event in September, he announced plans to expand the conference into new regions around the world. That expansion began with the first Domain Summit Asia conference that was held November 17th and 18th in Hong Kong. It came just 10 weeks after Helmuts and DN.com Founder Jack Dai decided to co-host the event after discussing the idea at the London show. That didn't leave a lot of time to put such an ambitious project together but, with a little help from their friends, they made it happen.

Not only that, they wound up selling every available seat for the inaugural edition of Domain Summit Asia. In addition to the around-the clock work put in by the Domain Summit and DN.com teams, Helmuts credited strong support from the .Asia team, Igor Mocni and Eric Yang for making the Hong Kong event such a memorable one. We weren't able to attend but Jack Dai and his highly efficient DN.com crew were kind enough to send us some photos and conference highlights from their perspective that are shared below.

As Asia's first professional domain industry event focusing on the B2B sector, the theme for Domain Summit Asia was "Precisely Connecting the Global Domain Industry Chain and Seizing the Trillion-Dollar Asian Market Dividend." The conference brought together global industry leaders, registrars, investors, legal experts and digital entrepreneurs to create a high-profile, highly connected, and effective international industry event on the shores of Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour.

Every step, from pre-event preparation to on-site execution, was the result of meticulous planning. As you would expect, Helmuts Meskonis (below) was one the key figures involved in coordinating participant affairs and overseeing on-site operations. His years of experience in the both the domain industry and event organization ensured the smooth progress of the Summit’s agenda.

Three Keynote Speeches provided Insights into the Future of the Industry. In his opening speech, DN.com founder Jack Dai , under the theme "Making Domains Great Again," elaborated on DN.com's platform mission and global vision. He stated that DN.com is committed to connecting buyers and sellers in China and around the world, building a win-win international domain ecosystem. Jack also shared the team's intense schedule of attending 20 industry conferences globally within the first ten months of 2025. This sustained passion and proactive action deeply inspired everyone.

Above: In the next Keynote, .Asia CEO Edmon Chung introduced the registry's "Go Create" concept, emphasizing that domain names are not only web addresses but also crucial elements of brand identity and value. Edmon explained why their uniqueness, scarcity, and interoperability will define the next generation of digital identity.

Above: Completing the well-received Keynote series, Oliver Yang from the .TOP Registry noted that the .top domain has surpassed 6 million registrations globally, becoming the tenth largest top-level domain worldwide, with business coverage in 200 countries and regions. .Top has positive brand associations in both Chinese and English contexts that have been key contributors to its market appeal.

Domain Name Summit also featured three insightful Roundtable Discussions built around the theme of A Clash of Ideas, Building Consensus, with panelists approaching the topic from the perspectives of technology, market, and law. In the first of those (above), the subject was The New Wave of gTLDs: Technology, Opportunities, and Challenges. Registry experts from Hong Kong, Europe, and North America unanimously agreed that education, compliance, and scale are key to the success of new general top-level domains (gTLDs), and expressed optimism about the enormous potential of emerging markets in Asia and Africa.

Above: In the next Roundtable, attention turned to Domain Investors, Brokers, and the Market. Investors and brokers from China, Hong Kong, Europe, the Middle East, and other regions gathered to focus on signs of market recovery, the demand for domains driven by AI, and the continued strength of short-character .com and .ai domains. A clear consensus emerged that the domain market is experiencing renewed vitality.

Above: The Roundtables concluded with a deep dive into Asian Domain Disputes, UDRP, and ccTLD Enforcement. Legal experts, using typical cases, provided analysis of the enforcement difficulties and solutions for Asian domain disputes, offering professional risk management guidance for investors and brands.

Above & below: With business out of the way, Domain Summit Asia attendees were treated to a Starry Night Party staged with Hong Kong's spectacular Victoria Harbour as its backdrop.

The rooftop party provided a relaxed atmosphere with pleasant background music that provided a perfect environment for lively conversation and the creation of new friendships and potential partnerships that will likely benefit participants for many years to come.

Social activity remained front and center the next day when guests participated in a Hong Kong city tour, visiting the renowned Wong Tai Sin Temple (above) and Victoria Harbour (below).  By sharing culturally rich local experiences, the tour helped deepen meaningful new relationships and strengthen existing ones.

The legacy of the inaugural Domain Name Summit Asia will be its role in helping build bridges between the Asian and global domain name industries, promoting the exchange of ideas, resource sharing, and trust building through speeches, roundtables, auctions, and networking. The industry insights, collaborative networks, and market momentum generated by the summit will help drive continuing innovation in the global domain name ecosystem.

Summit Founder Helmuts Meskonis told us Domain Summit Asia will definitely return next year and he already has late November 2026 dates and a possible new venue in mind. We will, of course, fill you in when details are finalized. In the meantime, his attention now turns to the next step in his global expansion, Domain Summit Africa, coming up in February.

Ooma to Pay Over $23 Million for Phone.com Business Founded by Domain Industry Pioneer Mike Mann

In the domain industry Mike Mann long ago cemented his position as one of the giants in the space. Over 20 years ago he amassed a portfolio of hundreds of thousands of high quality domain names while also building the premier domain aftermarket platform of the era in BuyDomains.com, a company he sold in 2005. In our business, due to Mike's prodigious success with domains, what he has accomplished as a company builder and serial entrepreneur probably hasn't been as celebrated as it should be.

The latest proof of that came this morning when Ooma, Inc., a smart communications platform for businesses and consumers, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Phone.com for approximately $23.2 million in cash, subject to customary working capital adjustments. Phone.com is a provider of cloud-based business communications for small and medium-sized organizations that Mike founded in 2006

The acquisition of Phone.com is expected to be accretive to Ooma’s adjusted EBITDA and non-GAAP earnings per share starting on the closing date of the transaction, which is expected to occur in the fourth quarter of Ooma’s fiscal year that ends January 31, 2026, subject to the receipt of required regulatory approvals and satisfaction or waiver of other customary closing conditions. Phone.com is expected to generate $22-$23 million in revenue and $1.0-$1.5 million in adjusted EBITDA annually, based on current run rates and before synergies.

Phone.com Founder

Ooma CEO Eric Stang said, "This planned acquisition is intended to continue our strategy to extend our leadership in serving SMB customers. Phone.com’s established platform, strong online presence, and direct sales model fit well with Ooma’s strategy and will enable opportunities to capture synergies over time. We look forward to building on the strong success Phone.com has achieved so far serving small business customers to deliver long-term value for our shareholders.”

Phone.com CEO Ari Rabban added, “We are pleased to join forces with Ooma, whose vision and capabilities align perfectly with our mission to provide smarter business communication solutions. I am extremely proud of our achievements and confident that Ooma’s commitment to quality, integrity, and steady growth will enable Phone.com to innovate and continue to deliver value to our customers.

Veteran Domain Industry Executive Paul Nicks Retiring After 18 Groundbreaking Years at GoDaddy

One of the most influential people in the domain investing world, Paul Nicks, has decided it's time to step back and enjoy some of his favorite things in life after 18 years in leadership roles at industry giant GoDaddy. Paul made the announcement in a LinkedIn post Thursday, writing "Hanging up my 9-5 hat for now and setting off to enjoy an early retirement. I've been in one job or another since I was 14 years old, I figure it's time to sit back and enjoy the spoils a bit." Most recently Paul has been serving as Vice President, Domain Investors at GoDaddy after previous stints as President (Domains), VP (Aftermarket) and several other roles dating back to 2007 when he first joined the company as its Aftermarket Development Manager.

During his time at GoDaddy Paul has had a huge impact on the domain investment field by ramping up recognition, services, support and personal interaction with the professional domain investment community. That has included GoDaddy's invaluable sponsorship and support for the Internet Commerce Association (the non-profit organization that fights to protect domain owner's rights). Paul himself served on the ICA Board of Directors but will now step down with his return to private life.

Paul Nicks

If you read our Cover Story about Paul that was published in December 2022, you will know that seeing him stay in one place for 18 years like he did at GoDaddy was the last thing any of his friends and family (and, I suspect, even Paul himself) would have expected. He grew up in a variety of cities scattered across the country and attended 7 different colleges (that is not a typo)!

In the final section of that story Paul talked about how much he loved to travel.  "I’ve been fortunate enough to go to conferences all around the U.S. and the rest of the world as well as visiting GoDaddy offices spread around the globe," Paul said. He added, "A quote from Mark Twain hangs on my wall (thanks to a very thoughtful gift from my wife) that sums up my feelings well: Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

So, it's probably a safe bet that Paul will be back on the road soon (if he isn't already). He will surely be missed but while wishing him "Happy Trails," we also took note of two words in his retirement announcement, "for now." Roads don't always run in a straight line. They can be a circle too. Either way, I'm sure this is one  traveling man we will be hearing from again.

Skins.com Sold for Over $1.4 Million - New Zero Fee CS2 Marketplace Obtained Name in Deal Brokered by QEIP.com

If you are not into gaming you may not be familiar with CS2 skins but if you are a Counter Strike 2 player, custom skins that you can use in the free-to-play tactical first-person shooter game from Valve Software, are a hot commodity. Skins are cosmetic items that change the visual appearance of characters, weapons, or other in-game objects. They are so popular that the market for them, while volatile, hit $6 billion in total value this year. That's why a Hong Kong based company ponied up $1,459,450 to get the entire category's exact match domain, Skins.com, for a newly launched marketplace for buying, selling and trading CS2 skins (with 0% fees for sellers).

Neil Patrick Bostick, the founder of QEIP.com,the brokerage that closed the Skins.com sale, filled me in on the deal that was closed a couple of months ago. The buyers wanted to wait until they had their marketplace up and running before letting word of the acquisition get out. With the Skins.com site as their new home base, Neil said "The amount of user acquisition the company has gotten since launch has been tremendous and is  an excellent case study for modern ROI on high value domains."

We will be charting the sale when our next bi-weekly domain sales report is released Wednesday evening, November 26, As of this writing, Skins.com is the 5th highest publicly reported domain sale of the year to date. It also gives QEIP credit for their role in two of 2025's biggest sales to date. In May they worked with Andrew Miller (Hilco Digital Assets) and Braden Pollock (LegalBrandMarketing.com) to close a $2,129,509 deal for #3 Fuse.com.
