Powerful Performance from the Domain Aftermarket Another Reason to Be Grateful Going Into Thanksgiving Weekend

One of America's favorite holidays, Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 28) is actually just the start of a cheished four-day weekend that begins with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday (along with LOTS of football) and continues all the way through Sunday (and even longer for many who don't even head home from their holidays trips until Monday). While Thanksgiving is a day that Americans pause to give thanks, those who make their living in the domain business around the world have good reason to celebrate too with the domain aftermarket turning in another powerful performance over the past two  weeks. Every big sale underscores the inherent value of meaningful domain names.

The run was highlighted by a trio of six-figure sales, including one of the ten biggest reported so far this year, as well as another that is one of the ten biggest ccTLD sales YTD. Both of those were closed at Afternic where the latest chart topper on our bi-weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart, Employer.com, changed hands for a handsome $450,000. The name was purchased by the people who run Recruiter.com. Their CEO, Jesse Tinsley, explained the reasons for the purchase, noting, "Why Employer.com? Because it’s easy to remember and perfectly captures our vision: which is empowering businesses to onboard effortlessly and pay employees anywhere in the world with ease."

Afternic also handled that big country code sale, #2 Fluid.io at $199,995. Raymond Hackney at TLDInvestors.com was one of the first to spot seller Joshua Schoen's post announcing the sale on X.com. Joshua is a veteran investor with a great portfolio and a lot of outstanding sales under his belt. The third domain to ring the six-figure bell this time around the track was Above.com's $100,000 sale of #3 Mapy.com.

The surge in .AI sales has been a major theme in the aftermarket all year and that has not changed. Sedo sold Reservation.ai and Reservations.ai in one transaction for $165,000, a tidy $82,500 each, making them bunkmates on our chart as well, sharing the #4 position. Those are two of four .ai domains on the leader board, all part of a larger pack of 8 ccTLD sales.

.Coms piled up 12 of the 21 chart entries (the extra spot resulting from a tie for the final spot). That limited the non .com gTLDs to just one rung on the ladder, occupied by Sedo's $25,200 sale of Poker.pro.

Thanks to Robbie Ferguson at RobbiesBlog.com, we also learned about a major, previously unreported historical domain sale from 2013. Robbie came across two news stories covering a legal dispute that revealed London's famed Daily Mail newspaper acquired the DailyMail.com domain name for $1.5 million that year from a much smaller U.S. publication, the Charleston Daily Mail in West Virginia.

While that led to a convoluted court battle among the multiple parties involved, the price paid for the domain was not in dispute. It is still being used by the London paper today as a redirect to their long time home base at DailyMail.co.uk. As a result, we have added that sale to the 2013 Top100 Chart in our Domain Sales Archive where it ranks as the # 4 sale reported that year.

Now, back to the present, here is how all of the leaders stacked up for the two weeks ending Sunday, November 24, 2024
