Latest Sales Chart Topped By a .Com, a .Net and a .Org But Not in the Order You Usually Expect

Summer holiday breaks produced some unusual sales chart results from data received over the past three weeks. Our reports normally come out bi-weekly but we were away for a couple of weeks ourselves, one of the reasons for the delay. The other was one of our major data suppliers, Sedo, being on their annual summer break. While on that well deserved hiatus they did not release a report  last week and won't this week either. Others were vacation as well but we've cobbled enough information together now to share what has come in (including a week of Sedo sales sent in prior to their reporting pause).

When you have a smaller set of data to work with, it is not uncommon to see less monopolization of the sale charts by the .coms. Less data gives you fewer high end sales and that opens the door for top tier sales in TLDs that typically sell for less than .coms to rank higher than they normally might. Such was the case this time around the track with a .org at the top of the leader board, followed by a .net, then the first .com

Regardless of the final chart position, Sedo's sale of the latest chart topper, FG.org at $95,000 is a nice one no matter how you slice it. They also took the #2 spot on our all extension Top 20 Sales Chart with Travelful.net at  €75,000 ($81,000). At first glance that one is a head scratcher but further examination showed the value from that domain comes almost solely from a high level of existing traffic from a travel website that once operated on it. Domains like that are often bought by overseas gambling sights and that was the case here. The traffic will dissipate over time as people don't find what they expected to see on the domain, but meanwhile the new owners are banking on gaining enough new customers from the flood of traffic to make the investment worthwhile. It was a domain only sale, so it is chart eligible but absent the  traffic it would not have been a valuable name.

Dynadot put the first .com on board - an always bankable 3-letter .com, with this one, XUG.com, going for $42,898. Sedo followed with with #4 Melwin.com at $33,000. The the first new TLD, Ton.cloud, rounded out the first five after Get.cloud sold it through Afternic for $25,300.

The ccTLDs had another very good outing, taking five spots on the leader board. Two of those crashed the top ten - Sedo's $19,780 sale of ISS.io and WeBroker.vc's $15,000 sale of #8 ASAP.vc. They also sold #16 Mobility.vc for $8,500

While the .coms didn't have the top sale they did, as usual, have the most chat entries with 10. The non .com gTLDs matched the five entries the country code domains posted. Their haul included a pair of $10,000 sales that tied for #11 -  Dynadot's sale of Assets.org and Tariq Ghafoor's sale of VacationRentals.info via Afternic.

Though not ready to chart, another transaction worth noting is Avi Schiffmann's deal to acquire the marvelous Friend.com domain for $1,887,843 under a payment plan. The acquisition was widely reported with Domain Name Wire's article among those providing the details.

As we head into the final weeks of summer, we are back on our regular bi-weekly schedule now, so you can expect our next report August 14. In the meantime, here is how the leaders stacked up for the three weeks ending Sunday, July 28, 2024
