Pair of $50,000 Sales at Sedo Headline A Week With the Most 5-Figure Deals Reported To Date

by Ron Jackson

A five-figure domain sale will usually make our weekly Top Ten chart. There have been just a few exceptionally strong sales weeks where one or two domains above 10K fell short of making the list, but we've never as many as this week. For the first time since we began this column in Oct. 2003 we had 14 five-figure sales reported, leaving 4 worthy contenders just shy of a place on the Big Board.

Sedo.com had a banner week, taking 5 of the 10 positions on our list including a pair that tied for the top spot at $50,000 each. Those were Neighbors.com and Therapy.com. Dale Porter of TheNameStore.com used Sedo to sell Neighbors.com. Sedo swept the top three spots, taking #3 with a German country code domain, VOIP.de at 20,000 ($26,038). Sedo landed two more .de's in a tie for the 7th position. They also had two of those five-figure sales that finished just off the chart due to the large number of high level sales this week.

GreatDomains rang up a quartet of five-figure sales including #4 Weights.com at $25,000 and #9 Feline.com at $15,000. Like Sedo, two of their five-figure sales landed just off the leaderboard. We also saw one of the biggest reported .ca (Canadian country code) sales to date, with Blog.ca going for $20,201 at Ebay to finish at #5. GetExpert.com was one step back at an even $20,000 after being sold in a private transaction by Don Putnam, a busy domainer from Austin, Texas who is now doing business as GotComs.com.

SnapNames.com anchored this week's chart with #10 HockeyCanada.com going for $14,600. We have many more strong sales to tell you about, as well as a quartet of four-figure New TLD sales, but first let's take a look at the complete Top Ten for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 13:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

Sedo's super week included a whopping 7 sales at the five-figure level. They closed out their quintet on the Top Ten with Car.de and ClubSchiffe.de ("club ship" in German) at 11,600 ($15,102) each, then kept the party going just off the chart with Schulbus.de ("school bus" in German) delivering 8,000 ($10,415) and WSD.com bringing $10,000. Sedo also scored with Medio.com ("medium" in Spanish) at 5,000 ($9,483), DataExpress.com at $9,000, Pneu.net ("tires" in French) at 5,500 ($7,162) and OilDoc.com at $6,000

Sedo did especially well with .de this week. In addition to the three they placed in the Top Ten, they sold Kreditbanken.de  ("loan banks" in German) for 3,900 ($5,079) and got 3,480 ($4,532) each for Krebsschutz.de ("cancer prevention" in German) and Aida-Clubschiffe.de ("Aida club ship" in German). They rounded out their top sellers list with Lantec.co.uk at 2,000 ($3,791) and NetPrice.com at $3,500. Sedo also had the top five sales on our New TLD chart as you'll see a bit later.

GreatDomains hit two out of the park on our Top Ten chart and repeated the feat by selling SM.org for $13,000 and CDZ.com for $10,000. They added another $7,500 for Awaken.com and $5,500 for Giraffes.com

Solid sales have also become par for the course at SnapNames. Exxxpress.com brought in $8,900 while SexySearch.com and Estadio.com ("stadium" in Spanish) each went for $8,050. They added $7,200 for MGB.com, $6,303 for BilliardTable.com and $5,875 for TheCrossing.com. Other winners at SnapNames included ComputerRAM.com at $5,000, MovieKing.com at $2,222 and Cutouts.com at $1,740

At Afternic.com, Taken.com took in $6,500 while Energy1.com generated $3,500. At Enom's Club Drop, FlyingCar.com landed $4,300 while TaxAssessor.com and Fertighaus.net each brought in $4,000. A rare .nu sale was made at the NamePros.com forum. Not much money at $250, but it is rare to see any aftermarket sales in that extension (Nuie country code).

New TLD Section

It's looking more and more like .biz is for real. After trailing .info in reported sales by a country mile in 2004, .biz has made it a real horse race in 2005. This week the extension took two of the top three sales including #1 Eintrittskarten.biz ("entry tickets" in German) at 2,200 ($2,865). #3 Dogs.biz accounted for another of four four-figure new TLD sales this week, going for 1,500 ($1,952). Considering the size of the huge market for dogs, dog food and pet care products that looks like a steal to us.

.Info took the #2, #4 and #5 domains, scoring with Ride.info at 1,600 ($2,084), Rabatte.info ("rebates" in German) at 1,500 ($1,952) and Finds.info at 500 ($652). All five of the top sales were made at Sedo, the perennial leader in new extension sales (as well as a mainstream powerhouse).  Here's a look at the complete New TLD leader's list for the week ending Feb. 13:

Our Year-To-Date New TLD best sellers list gets four new entries this week, two are .biz and two are .info. Our YTD chart currently lists all 2005 sales of $1,000 and up. After this week, .info holds a slight 13-12 lead over .biz in the race for most four-figure new extension sales. Here is how they stand after 6 weeks:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!
