Robots.com Does the Heavy Lifting In $40,000 Sale at GreatDomains

by Ron Jackson

The robots took over this week and as far as GreatDomains is concerned that was a good thing. Their $40,000 sale of Robots.com gave them the lead position on our new Top Ten sales chart. FoodPoisoning.com was close behind after going for $36,500 in a private transaction. The domain was transferred from The-New-Dot.com to a California broker who was acting on behalf of an unidentified client. The nameservers haven't changed yet so the original pages will remain up until the new owners unveil their site.

There were two other five figure sales this week, both turned in by Afternic.com to claim the 3rd and 4th positions on the Big Board.  Those were PrepaidPhone.com at $15,000 and FEM.com at $14,000. Afternic wound up hitting the trifecta with still another chart entry at #8, HarborPatrol.com which went for $8,250.

Sedo.com had a big week as well with a quartet of domains on the Top Ten led by #5 Diskothek.de ("discotheque" in German) at $9,837. They also scored with a .com a .net and a .co.uk! With Sedo and Afternic sweeping 7 of 10 positions between them that left only one slot up for grabs and it went to DotcomAgency.com where #6 LossAdjusters.com went for $9,250. Here's a look at the complete Top Ten for the week ending Sunday, October 3:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

As always Sedo used a full palette of extensions to paint their impressive sales list. In addition to their German TLD domain at #5, they scored with a British domain, Vegetarian.co.uk (#7 at $8,912), a .net (VitaminE.net) and a .com (FlightDiscounts.com) with the latter two tying for 9th at $7,388 each. Sedo saw lots of additional action just off the chart. CarLocator.co.uk sold for 4,000 ($7,129) and Brustvergrsserung.de ("chest enlargement" in German) added another 5,560 ($6,845). Three more .de's rounded out the list; Pantys.de (4,350 = $5,356), Liebe-SMS.de (4,000 = $4,925) and Fussball-Manager.de (3,000 = $3,694).

SnapNames.com continues to show well since moving to their new auction format. Their week was highlighted by AnyDVD.com at $5,655 and NightSearch.com at $5,100. MailServers.com sent in another $4,600 while Republic.net brought $4,001 and Juice.net squeezed out $1,498.

Pool.com had a long list in the same price range led by HardcoreCartoons.com at $5,600 (if they turn the concept into a TV show Pee Wee Herman would be the obvious choice to host it). MTP.com was next at $4,000 (nice price for a prime 3-letter combination) followed by BlackMovie.com at $3,200 and Friendter.com at an even $3,000. Pool also had a trio of .coms at $2,050; NaughtyCartoons.com, AccountManagement.com and HoodRiver.com. They also scored with both .net and .org. NBA.org was a $3,700 slam dunk while Hostel.org added $2,388. Stockbrokers.net attracted a $2,588 investment and Invitations.net got a $1,060 RSVP.

At Enom's Club Drop GovLoans.com ladled out $3,115.  Right behind were RealFacials.com at $3,015 and Agoraphobia.com at $3,107. PackageTours.com brought home $2,909 while Atlante.com added $2,707, Hiltons.com checked in with $2,407 and TrainingCourse.com contributed $2,130.

Moniker.com/DomainSystems.com hit a $4,625 chip shot with GolfPushcarts.com, but CEO Monte Cahn was more excited about closing a $69,525 deal for Axiom.com that has been in the works for some time. That one will involve a series of monthly payments (the first of which was received this week) before the transfer is made (domains aren't listed on our charts until all payments are in and the domain has been transferred).

At other ports of call, DentalInstruments.com went for $2,530 at Namewinner.com, a venue that also collected $1,220 for PushToTalk.com. CancerOnline.com brought $2,888 at Afternic and DotcomAgency.com proved long isn't always wrong by selling ContractManagementSoftware.com for an even $2,000

We also saw a rare high dollar .ca (Canadian country code) sale this week. Presents.ca went for $8,000 Canadian ($6,340 U.S.). The owners of Presents.com bought the domain from Glen Shortliffe. In other deals InnovationHQ.com picked up 203.com for $4,250 and Ben Kirshner of CoffeeForLess.com added still another java domain to his growing collection, paying $4,000 for OfficeCoffee.com

In the Pipeline: A very interesting deal is in the works if a report from Yahoo Financial News Oct. 4 is to be believed. Vancouver, Canada firm Communicate.com said in the report (originating from Business Wire) that they had received the final installment of a $1 million payment for four domains; Automobile.com, Exercise.com, Call.com and Makeup.com. Manhattan Assets was named as the buyer, however at press time none of the domains had yet been transferred from Communicate.com. The company stated in the story that "more information on the sales agreement can be found in Communicate.com's regulatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, including the Company's most recent annual report on Form 10-KSB and quarterly report on Form 10-QSB."  We'll look further into this once the domains are transferred....Another nice deal could be in the works at Enom's Club Drop where an auction for HisFirstTime.com ended at $15,730. Of course now comes the hard part - collecting!

Two of this week's sales, Robots.com and FoodPoisoning.com, were strong enough to crack our Year-To-Date Top Sales chart. We expanded the list to 62 domains this week to make way for the newcomers.  Here is the complete rundown of big winners so far in 2004:

New TLD Section

.Biz gets a turn in the new extension spotlight this week thanks to the $2,500 sale of OwnIt.biz which tops our New TLD Great 8 Chart. Canada's Jim Wright (known to members at the NamePros.com forum as Jaydub) sent the .biz and the matching .us to OwnIt Mortgage Solutions of Woodland Hills, California. OwnIt.us added another $1,500 to the deal and took the #2 slot on the new chart, pushing .info into an unaccustomed middle of the pack position this week. .Info made up plenty of ground from there though, sweeping the rest of our new list.

Diving.info was #3 after selling for $1,052 at SnapNames. Buyer Stu Smith of Dajimbo.com also picked up the #4 domain at Snap, Sunscreen.info for $925. He then went across the street to get #7 Supplement.info for $700 at Pool.com. Pool also had the #5 domain, a very nice geographical name, Nassau.info, that went for $913. SnapNames gets New TLD bragging rights this week though after selling half of the domains on the new chart. Here is a look at all of the top reported new extension sales for the week ending Oct.3:

5. Nassau.info    $913 Pool
6. Clips.info  $710 SnapNames
7. Supplement.info $700 Pool
8. Appliance.info $661 SnapNames

SnapNames winning quartet was filled out with Clips.info at $710 and Appliance.info at $661. Paul Tattersfield of England's GPMGroup.com picked up the latter domain. SnapNames had a number of other notable sales including Earthquake.info at $655, Volunteer.info at $643 and Buildings.info at $575. They also sold ChatRoom.info for $539 and PropertyManagement.info for $485. Sedo's new extension sales included Judas.info at 500 ($616) and SoftwareCommunity.biz at 495 ($609)

Interest in 3-letter domains also remains high. At Namewinner an auction for NAH.info ended at $490 but the domain hasn't been transferred yet. There likely would have been several other four figure sales this week if some of the best names weren't being caught by inexpensive flat rate drop catchers like GoDaddy.com.  This week they landed Template.info, Decorating.info, RPM.info and Ship.info to name just a few. Those cost lucky buyers no more than $18.95 each.

A couple of high dollar .infos we mentioned last week have still not been transferred away from SnapNames, indicating the high bidders may not have paid. Numbers.info had closed at $2,050 and Accounts.info finished at $1,450. We'll keep an eye on them to see if they finally go through.

Our Year-To-Date New TLD Top 30 Chart remains unchanged from last week list as no domains went above the $4,000 price of admission. Here are all of the top reported new extension sales through Oct. 3:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!
