Simply De Best! German Country Code Domain Commands Over $36,000 at Sedo

by Ron Jackson

Sedo.com's hot streak continued this week. After placing six names on our Top Ten last week the popular auction venue came back with five more this time out. Three of those, including #1 Marktforschung.de ("market research" in German), were German country code domains. Sedo's home base is in Cologne, Germany while their U.S. operations are run from a new office in Boston.

Marktforschung.de went for 28,000 ($36,630) to give Sedo the top rung on the big board and they claimed the runner-up slot as well after collecting $30,000 for Stereos.com. The other .de's that Sedo placed on the new chart were #5 Fallschirmspringen.de ("skydiving" in German), sold for 8,700 ($11,383), and #6 Tensegrity.de at 8,000 ($10,465). Tensegrity is a word from cellular biology that medical dictionaries define as "the hypothesis that cells can behave like structures in which shape results from balancing tensile and hydrostatic forces". Be sure to tell all your friends!

Though this column is about individual domain sales we have to tell you about a massive $164 million dollar bulk domain purchase announced today. Seattle based Marchex, Inc. is buying a portfolio of somewhere between 50,000-100,000 domains (the exact figure was not released) from Name Development Inc., a corporate entity that appears to represent domains owned by Ultimate Search, a pioneer in the PPC (pay per click) industry. The Marchex announcement says the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2005.

Eight of the ten domains on this week's chart went for five figures, including 3rd ranked Free-Sex.com which changed hands for $15,000 in a private sale. Enom's Club Drop nailed down the #4 slot with MyCapitolOneCard.com at $13,315. The Overture number on that domain is very high - 6,127 with extension. That was one of two Club Drop entries on the Top Ten. Afternic.com scored twice as well and accounted for the remaining five-figure domains with GlobalVoice.com and Twox.com each going for $10,000.

The new extensions also had a good week with .biz, .info and .us all scoring four-figure sales. The leader in that group, NYC.biz, ranks among the four biggest .biz sales reported this year. We'll have more on that in our New TLD section a little later on. Right now let's take a look at this week's complete Top Ten:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

NetIndex.com ($9,811) and Keypads.com ($9,607) anchored the chart and contributed to very strong weeks at Sedo and Club Drop. Sedo's list also included Geffroy.com at $7,500 and a trio at $5,000 each; Client.com, Enagic.com and 5B.com. Other .com winners there were BHFBank.com 3,500 ($4,580), HRPC.com 2,400 ($4,483), Season.com $3,500 and MediaHelp.com at $3,488. As always Sedo scored extra points with country codes too. Mark.de went for 3,500 ($4,580) and Schneesicher.de (roughly translates to "definite snow" in English) attracted a cool 3,000 ($3,925). GoYellow.nl (Dutch country code) accounted for another 3,000 ($3,925) sale.

Enom Club Drop's supporting cast included OldNationalBank.com at $6,607, Body.net at $5,107 and AuctionPort.com at $3,207. RealButt.com sat well with them too after going for $3,030. Johansen.com ($3,007), PortablePC.com ($2,707) and CanadaStamps.com ($2,007) rounded out the Club Drop leader's list.

In addition to their two Top Ten entries, Afternic.com rang up many more solid sales including VideoBox.com and SexTherapy.com at $7,000 each. Sportsland.com brought in another $4,900, followed by MovingUp.com ($4,688), XMovie.com ($4,488) and NetFiler.com ($4,000)

At SnapNames.com ChristianMingle.com earned a heavenly $8,600. DogTicks.com scratched out another $5,600 and NetLife.com added $5,288. Snap also got $4,299 for Worklife.com, $4,100 for ThumbPost.com and $1,400 for OQT.com

Pool.com netted at least 10 four-figure .coms ranging from $1,500 to over $3,000, headed by CapitalOneCards.com and GothSex.com at $3,100 each. Eutopia.com brought in $2,300, followed by Conquerha.com at $1,550 and Motiva.com at $1,540. WebDialer.com and Thehn.com were worth $1,510 each and the trio of InteriorPaintColors.com, Khaleh.com and EliteHipHop.com added $1,500 apiece. Pool also had a nice .net sale, Kayak.net at $3,633

There were also some lower level .net sales including DiscoverCard.net ($1,058) and Shock.net ($1,000) at Pool and Voom.net ($1,000) at Sedo. The best .org sale we heard about this week was LN.org, sold by the Berube Company (BCompany.us) in a private transaction for $1,800. Others of interest were UPF.org ($870) and Burundi.org ($777), both at Pool.

New TLD Section

The new extensions bounced back from a soft week last week with a quintet of four-figure sales headed by one of the four biggest .biz sales reported this year - NYC.biz which went for $6,000 in a private sale. Guide.info took the #2 slot after changing hands for $3,200 at DNForum.com. .US got into the act too, tying for third with the $1,500 sale of Teen.us at Afternic. BVV.info shared that chart position after selling for the same amount in a private transaction.

Sedo contributed still another 4-figure sale to the list with BreastCancer.info selling there at an even $1,000. The balance of the chart was evenly divided between .us, .biz and .info.  Here is a look at the complete new extension list for the week ending Nov. 21:

Stay.us gave Afternic a second chart entry at #6, while Sedo wound up with three on the list, including #7 Allgeau.biz (a well-known region in Germany) and #8 Klebstoffe.info ("adhesives" in German). Cult.us just missed making the cut after going for $600 in a private sale (the seller was Howard Hoffman of PPCIncome.com who also made the BVV.info sale charted above). Sedo's other sales included Ultra.biz and Table.info at 400 ($524 each) and Laurent.biz at 300 ($392). My personal sales list this week included Branches.info at $381 and Rambo.biz at $350. Looking ahead to next week a 3-letter .biz sale (CKU.biz) is nearing completion at $1,000. Only the transfer remains to be completed.

NYC.biz moves onto our Year-To-Date New TLD chart this week at #18. Here are  the top 35 new extension sales reported through Nov. 21:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!
