Sedo and SnapNames Soar As Infection.com Triggers an Outbreak of Big Sales

by Ron Jackson

Last week SnapNames.com landed four domains on our Top Ten list. They're back again this week and though they didn't claim as many slots, they nailed down the big one, topping the Big Board with Infection.com at $29,600. SnapNames also landed in the lucky #7 position with iComply.com at $12,300. This was one of those rare weeks where every domain on our new list hit five figures (as did one that fell just short of the chart).

Though SnapNames occupied the penthouse suite this week, Sedo.com did something no one has done before, reporting 7 five-figure domains in a single week to place six names on our Top Ten chart! To top it off, Sedo CEO Matthew Bentley told us they had 3 more in that rarified atmosphere that they could not report due to non-disclosure agreements! It's the most powerful 7-day performance we've seen from one venue since we began compiling records in the fall of 2003.

Sedo's list was headed by the week's #2 domain, Profinet.com at $18,807. They also landed three .de (German country code) domains on the Big Board, including an International character domain name, #4 ffentlichesrecht.de ("public law" in German) at $15,044. Sedo rounded out their blockbuster week with a .co.uk and another .com (and  those are just the charted domains - there is a long list of solid sales just off the chart that we'll get to a bit later).

Though Sedo and SnapNames left little room for anyone else, Erections.com did rise out of the pack to claim the #3 position at $18,000 after changing hands in a private sale. The sale was made jointly by Chris Chena and InnovationHQ.com. They had tried shopping the domain around to major drug companies that manufacture products like Viagra and Cialis. While they had some strong initial interest, in the end those companies decided the term was a bit too direct for mass marketing. Still you can't keep a domain like this down and they found a private buyer in short order.

The only other domain to crack the Sedo/SnapNames chart monopoly was HealthCareCareers.com, courtesy of Enom's Club Drop. That name attracted a healthy $12,615 to finish #6 on our new list. Let's take a look at the complete Top Ten, then we'll continue with a long list of additional sales that are sure to please:

GUM.de  8,000 = $10,376 Sedo

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

The rest of the chart story centers around Sedo. You've noted #5 Ibar.com at $15,000 followed by a sweep of the final three positions with a trio of fine ccTLDs. Odds.co.uk at $11,123 continues a nice run for the UK country code this year. Of course, Germany's .de (the world's second most popular extension), is always a force. A pair of those domains, both of the 3-letter variety, LLG.de and GUM.de anchored the board at $10,376 each. Sedo had still another five-figure sale just off the chart, GoYellow.com at an even $10,000

As impressive as those numbers are, the scary thing is those were just the start at Sedo. Another trio of .de's lead the rest of their roster. PartnerShop.de went for 5,800 ($7,516), PublicLaw.de won a 5,000 ($6,479) verdict and GreatBritain.de marched in with another 3,000 ($3,888). Pico-de-Gallo.com served up a tasty $5,000 despite the double hyphens. HeySister.com called in the same sum, followed by HandyLogos.com at 4,000 ($5,183), MediaHelp.com at $3,488 and FlowerStation.com at 2,500 ($3,239)

Like Sedo, SnapNames had a solid list in addition to their charted domains. UPay.com returned $6,250 while BabyToy.com rattled up another $6,120. ETX.com was worth $5,488, followed closely by WeddingConsultant.com ($5,200) and VIPCams.com ($5,100). QMX.com brought in $3,100, GayPix.com snapped up $2,550 and WorkoutPlan.com pumped out $2,372. .Net was pretty quiet but MIG.net did buzz in with $1,124.

Back at Enom's Club Drop, the misspelled FireHotQoutes.com scored a sizzling $6,430. That high traffic domain registers an impressive 3,565 with the extension in Overture. LaptopBags.com bagged even more money, going for $6,607. ElectricBoutique.com was also plugged in, delivering $5,112. Club Drop's other winners included BabyPhotoAlbum.com ($3,607), Pavo.com ($2,907) and LongDrug.com ($2,107).

At Afternic.com $5,000 flowed in from WaterWizard.com. EdmontonHomes.com added a cozy $2,888 and PokerSet.com dealt a $2,800 winning hand. ClickImage.com caught $2,500 and OpeningNight.com raised the curtain on another $2,450. Elsewhere, Mayan.com went for $6,000 at GreatDomains but Pool.com apparently missed the boat as we have no reported sales there.

*****

While we saw a load of rock solid sales this week, just one scored high enough to slip onto our Year To Date leader board. That was Infection.com which takes up residency at #67.  Here is the complete rundown of big winners so far in 2004:

New TLD Section

While the action was hot and heavy on our mainstream chart it was one of the quietest weeks we've seen all year for the new TLD's. After a very strong performance last week, we had just seven sales reported this week (leaving one vacancy on our new extension chart) and only one of those reached four figures. The new #1 domain is SuperNova.info which cast a $1,069 glow at Sedo. SuperNova.us was right behind at $648, also at Sedo (a venue that accounted for five of the sales on this week's list).

The only other domain topping $500 was Warenproben.info ("product samples" in German) at $518. Things are likely to return to normal next week. We know of one 3-letter .info that is in escrow at $1,500 (the transfer is currently underway). The balance of the chart is split evenly between .info and .us domains. Here is a look at the complete new extension list for the week ending Nov. 14:

It looks like it was a very good week to be out bargain hunting. Another reason for the low numbers was a relatively poor selection of dropping domains. The auction houses just didn't have much to offer in the new extensions this week. At this time last year, nice names dropped by the truckload as .info hit its two-year anniversary. Those were names that had been taken back in 2001 when the registry opened. Speculators quickly snatched those up and it doesn't look like they plan to let many of them go as they come up for renewal now. No surprise really since prices on high quality .info domains has taken a big jump over the past 12 months.

Our Year-To-Date New TLD chart remains unchanged this week. Here are all of the top reported 2004 new extension sales through Nov. 14:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!
