Animation.com Goes for $150,000 To Take A Place Among The Year's Top Ten Reported Sales

by Ron Jackson

Cartoons may be for kids but there is big money in the art that produces those Saturday morning classics. If you need proof look at the $150,000 Paraguay's Chris Chena just paid for Animation.com. The domain is a traffic magnet with an Overture score of 1,752 (with the extension). In addition to easily topping our new weekly Top Ten list, this deal was big enough to crack the top ten on our Year To Date sales chart as well.

The domain becomes part of one of the best portfolios in the business. Chena is a veteran  investor in both English and Spanish language top tier domains. He has spent much of this year sweeping up superb one-word Spanish domains and he added still another this week, landing Cocina.com ("kitchen/cooking" in Spanish) for $30,000. Coupled with Animation.com that gave him the top two spots on the big board this week. Both were private transactions.

A seller who listed at Afternic.com became $20,000 richer after that venue moved Become.com in the highest reported sale among the commercial sites. That was good for #3 on our new list. Enom's Club Drop and Sedo.com were also big winners these week as each claimed three positions in the Top Ten. The lead dog in Club Drop's trifecta was #4 HisFirstTime.com at $15,730. Sedo's trio was fronted by NevadaMLS.com which tied for 5th at $15,000. The other domain hitting that mark was eCoffee.com, sold by Chad Wright in a private transaction.

Let's take a look at the complete chart, then we'll continue to run down another busy week for the domain business in a year that will be remembered as the time the industry enjoyed a historic turnaround:

8. EasyLiving.de  8,000 = $9,862 Sedo
9. MaturePics.com  $7,807 Enom Club Drop
10. JavaJobs.com $7,510 Sedo

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

Enom's Club Drop and Sedo alternated positions to close out this week's leader board. Club Drop fattened up on TheZoneDiet.com at $10,107 and MaturePics.com at $7,807 while Sedo kicked back with EasyLiving.de  (the only non .com on the list) at $9,862 and JavaJobs.com at $7,507. The success for both venues continued well beyond the Top Ten chart.

In addition, Sedo banked 4,500 ($5,543) for Marktforschung.com ("market research" in German). They also rode the German country code, .de, to another winning winning performance (.de just crossed 8 million total registrations this week, second only to .com in total regs worldwide). FondDiscount.de ("stock discount") sold for 4,000 ($4,927), AutoItalia.de had 3,500 ($4,311) under the hood and two others, Korea.de and TopFoto.de, commanded 2,500 ($3,079) each. A .at domain (from Germany's next door neighbor, Austria), Blasen.at ("blow" in German) went for 3,399 ($4,187). Sedo also collected 2,500 ($3,079) for MovieDatabase.net, $2,000 for 247Mobile.com and $1,000 for MOTW.com (a strong number for a four-letter acronym with no apparent existing traffic).

Club Drop mopped up with BambooFloors.com at $3,410 and JIP.com at $3,409. At $2,209 Vite.com kept the energy level high until it was time for a  NAP.net ($2,107). Club Drop's Pacific Northwest neighbors, SnapNames.com, also had ample opportunity to ring the cash register this week. Whispers.com spoke loudly of Snap's improved performance after going for $5,050. TradingOnline.com added $3,700 and FunnyFarm.com brought even more smiles at $3,600. BibleGames.com provided a $3,225 blessing and .org even got into the act, with USMetric.org measuring out an even $1,000.

Back on the East Coast, Afternic turned in another good show with OnRequest.com dedicating $6,000 to the bottom line. FreeMovies.net attracted a paying customer who laid out $5,000 for his admission ticket. HSBCAutoCredit.com added $4,326 (HSBC is a well-known bank) and PrepaidCellularPhone.com dialed up another $3,888

Looks like the tide was out at Pool.com this week as the only one we heard about was BoxingClub.com at $3,001. Elsewhere, a couple of members at the DomainState.com forum worked out a $2,000 deal for CrazyEights.com (the domain going from Zoot to Targetpro).

In the Pipeline: A $65,000 deal for iFly.com is nearing completion at Sedo. We've been in touch with the buyer as well as Sedo and there appears to be little doubt that this one will be soaring to the upper reaches of our Top Ten soon. We'll have more on the deal (and acquiring company) when the transfer takes place. Meanwhile the four domains in that reported $1 million dollar deal we told you about in the Pipeline last week have still not been transferred. We'll keep an eye on them for you.

Our Year To Date chart gets two new members this week. Animation.com takes up residence in the Top Ten alongside Beef.com (the two are tied for 9th at $150,000). Meanwhile Cocina.com moves into an eight-way logjam tied for the 55th spot at $30,000. Here is the complete rundown of big winners so far in 2004:

New TLD Section

.Info slipped to an unaccustomed #3 slot on last week's New TLD chart (behind .biz and .us) but more than made up for it this week by completely running the board on our new Great 8 list. ETC.info led the way after changing hands for $4,000, enough to also earn a spot on the Year To Date leaderboard. Sandip Sandhu sent the domain to the Etchells Technology Corporation of Northampton, Massachusett in a private transaction.

Sedo was right behind with a nice international character German word domain, Brsenbrief.info ("market letter in German) at $3,697. That's the highest new extension IDN sale we have seen to date. Sedo also took the 7th slot with another German word, Bodenbelag.info ("flooring" in German).

SnapNames.com hit the chart bulls eye three times this week, led by #3 Numbers.info at $2,050. That domain and #5 Accounts.info at $1,450 were both purchased by Nokta Internet Technologies of Berkeley, California, a company that has been very active in acquiring .info keyword domains.

There were also a couple of nice private sales on the board, both brokered by Daniel Sitar of GTWeb. In one of those Dale Porter of TheNameStore.com landed a real beauty, Advertise.info at $1,500. The other deal saw PenPals.info change hands for $1,300. 6 of the 8 domains on the chart were in 4 figures and the other two missed by $25 or less in another strong week for the new extensions.  Here is a look at the complete New TLD list for the week ending Oct. 10:

8. Birthdays.info $975 SnapNames

Sedo and Snapnames anchored the chart with a pair of sales just under the $1,000 mark, Bodenbelag.info at $986 and Birthdays.info at $975. Sedo had three others in the high 3-figure range, APlus.info at 750 ($923), Winterurlaub.biz ("winter holiday" in German) at 600 ($739) and Mame.info at 565 ($696). Winterurlaub.biz was the week's top reported .biz transaction (the sale was made by Pascal von den Busch of www.ScriptSearch.de)

In some other deals of note, Dale Porter (TheNameStore.com) sold OnTheBeach.info for $750 (nice for a 3-word new extension domain) and SnapNames sold Latest.info for $580. On the .US front I am sending GCC.us to the Garrett Consulting Company for $1,200. The domain is being redirected to their GarrettConsultingCompany.com website until they complete the payment schedule we have agreed on (the domain isn't eligible for the chart until all payments have been made and the domain transferred).

ETC.info slips onto Our Year-To-Date New TLD Top 30 Chart (in a three-way tie for 30th) after hitting the $4,000 entry price on the button. Here are all of the top reported new extension sales through Oct. 10:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!
