$23,000 Sale of GourmetCoffee.com Provides the Perfect Blend for Pool's Bottom Line

by Ron Jackson

You think gourmet coffee costs too much
at $14 a pound? How about $1400 a letter for the domain name! Of course, that includes the extension but that's always the most expensive part! Pool.com brewed up that tasty $23,000 sale to trigger a caffeine rush that propelled them to the top of our new weekly sales chart.

As it happens, GourmetCoffee.com wasn't the only treat in Pool's carafe. The Canadian auction house accounted for half of the sales on our new Top Ten list. Their other gems included another five-figure deal for InternetStats.com. It hit #4 on the chart after going for $10,099

Those two domains served as bookends for a pair of five-figure sales at Sedo.com that took the 2nd and 3rd positions. The week's runner-up domain was a German country code entry, Motorradreisen.de (German for "motorcycle travel") that revved up sales to the tune of $12,099. Vekselberg.com was right behind at $10,913. We would guess that domain is headed for the portfolio of Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg. The oil baron is a mainstay on Forbes Magazine's list of the world's richest men and has holdings that include the planet's largest private collection of Faberge eggs.

Paraguay's Chris Chena joins us again this week, this time in the #5 position, occupied by his latest acquisition Sitios.com (Spanish for "sites"). Chena, who already owned the singular version of the domain, paid an even $10,000 in a private transaction to add the plural version to his collection.

As always there were other deals that would have hit the upper reaches of our chart if the participants had not asked that the domains be kept confidential. Moniker.com/DomainSystems.com was involved in two of those this week, one worth $85,000 and the other valued at $22,500. Moniker/DS still managed to claim a place among the week's elite that were released. Their $8,000 sale of Prestegio.com tied Sedo's ConnectX.com for the lucky #7 position. Pool accounted for the remaining three positions on the big board. Let's take a look at the full list before continuing our analysis of the week that was:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

Pool's hot week included multiple highs with Hopes.com, high traffic misspelling WieghtWatchers.com and FreeArcades.com all landing comfortably in the mid four-figure range to claim positions in the Top Ten. WieghtWatchers.com scores 754 with the extension in Overture, so it shouldn't take too long for the buyer to recoup his cost through pay per click revenues.

Pool racked up some other nice sales below the big board. Misspell FreArcade.com (568 in Overture with the extension) went for $2,700, HospitalWeb.com dispensed $2,480, FreeEmbroidery.com stitched a $2,150 purse and JSingles.com added another $2,051. Shamrock.net also proved to be a lucky combination, going for $1,275. Pool also has some good ones in the Pipeline that we will talk about a bit later.

As always, Sedo salts our report with a wide variety of extensions. In addition to their three Top Ten entries, the popular auction venue moved Ferchau.com for $5,327, Woman.info for $5,000 and AdultsOnline.co.uk for $3,638. Woman.info tops our New TLD chart, a list that Sedo always dominates (and this week was no exception). We'll get to that momentarily but first let's run down some other notable sales around the net.

At Afternic.com, PartnershipForms.com went for an even $4,000. TYY.com added $2,995 to the till, while MyFile.com was worth $2,888 and GayTouch.com attracted $2,500. At Moniker.com/DomainSystems.com, In2Store.com rang the register for $3,650. Moniker/DS also reported a rare China country code sale with Payback.cn going for $624. Over at Enom's Club Drop, Colman.com claimed $2,700 and a misspelling of clipart, CilpArt.com (162 with the extension in Overture) sold for $1,300.

In the Pipeline: Pool dominates the pipeline this week (just as they did the Top Ten). They have one of the year's biggest .net sales nearing completion after an auction for Answer.net ended at $10,850. Others still in escrow include FashionForum.com at $5,600 and GourmetCoffees.com at $3,560. That of course is the plural version of the domain that was this week's biggest seller. Stars.org is also moving through the Pool pipeline after going for a high bid of $1,737. One other note - we mentioned PBI.com in last week's Pipeline report after it went for $12,500 at Pool. The transfer hasn't been done yet, but we're sure the sale will be completed since Chris Chena was the buyer.

None of this week's reported sales went high enough to crack our Year-To-Date Top 40 list (GourmetCoffee.com missed by a little under $4,000) so that chart remains unchanged from last week. Here are the big winners so far this year:

New TLD Section

Now lets move on to the new frontier (.info, .biz and .us). After suddenly being challenged by .us and .biz the last two weeks, .info reasserted itself this week, taking 5 of the 7 slots on out New TLD chart. As usual, The Super 7 leader came from Sedo (along with the next four in line). As we noted earlier in this report, that was Woman.info at $5,000

As we were going to press (June 22) we got word that Wyoming.info just changed hands for $3,000 in a private sale. That will be eligible for the chart next week (our weekly charts, released every Tuesday evening, include sales for the 7-day period ending each Sunday). Professor Robert Connor was the buyer of Wyoming.info. He plans to build a geographic portal with information on tourist attractions (including the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park) as well as other information about the state. It will be similar to a state site he already owns, NorthDakota.info.

Germany remains a hotbed of interest in .info. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th domains on this week's best seller list are all German words. Zinsen.info (German for "interest") hit #2 at $2,420. Gasthof.info ("guesthouse") was next at $847 and Deutscher-Schferhund.info ("German Shepherd') was 4th at $753.  Another sizeable .info sale we mentioned last week, Industrial.info, remains in escrow at Afternic after going for $2,400.

As we look at the complete new extension list, you'll see .biz is back taking 2 of the last 3 slots on the Super 7.  Here is a look at the complete list for the week ending June 20:

5.  BVL.biz  600 = $726 Sedo
6. Dorset.info 300 = $546 Pvt Sale
7. SDI.biz $450 Pvt Sale

.Biz scored with a pair or 3-letter domains this week. In my own experience, I have seen steady interest in these domains in the mid three-figure range (in fact SDI.biz was mine). Dorset.info slipped in between the two .biz domains after going for $546. Dorset is a well-known county in England and this looks to be an excellent value for a good geographic domain.

We also know of a geographic .US that would have made the chart this week but the parties involved did not want to release the name. I can tell you that it was an American city name (just over 50,000 in population) that went for $600.

Woman.info showed who really rules the roost this week and the $5,000 price tag was good enough to crack our Year-To-Date New TLD Top 25, coming in at #20. Here is a look at 2004's top sellers through June 20.

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!
