Blockbuster Sale of California.com Gets 2019 Domain Sales Season Off to a Good Start

Earlier today we released the news that Mark Thomas, the CEO & Founder at VIPBrokerage.com, had closed a $3 million sale of a great geodomain - California.com. That's the biggest geodomain sale reported since we began tracking and verifying aftermarket sales back in 2003 (in 2000, before I entered the industry, there were some credible reports of a $5 million sale of Korea.com). The California.com sale also ranks as one of the all-time 20 biggest sales we've reported in any category, tying for 17th on that elite list. So kudos to Mark on another big sale - he's had many including one of the five biggest in 2017, 01.com at $1.82 million.

Another guy who is no stranger to the upper end of the market - James Booth at BQDN.com - also rang the bell again this week, closing a $115,000 sale of GME.com. The ever popular 3-letter .coms have been one of James's specialties and he has sold an extraordinary number of them in recent years.

Another big development this week was getting a previously undisclosed list of recent sales from long time friend Greg Ricks at PerfectName.com. When I entered the business in 2002 Greg owned DNForum.com where I and many others first learned the ins and outs of the business. Greg has a great portfolio so he is always closing sales but he credits this recent wave of them to deciding to put a price tag on a number of names that were previously in "Make Offer" status. Operators of sales platforms are always saying you can make more sales if you price your domains and Greg's results may be "exhibit A" for that as he wound up sweeping nine spots on our latest weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart, including six of the top 10. PerfectName's run started with #3 RedBarn.com at $60,750 and #5 ALR.com at $55,000

By Ron Jackson

Sandwiched in between those two was Sedo's $59,999 sale of Adika.com. Sedo had a nice outing too, matching PerfectName with nine chart entries of their own. Sedo's haul included both of the ccTLD sales that made the Big Board - #16 Luminaires.fr at $11,400 and #20 NXO.eu at $9,750.

The non .com gTLDs were limited to just one entry, but that was a very solid one - PerfectName's $25,000 sale of #10 Email.org. Everything else went to the .coms

Non .com gTLDs (.net, .org and others, including new gTLDs)

It was slow going for the Non .com gTLDs this week with only five sales reported for the entire category. As I noted in the all extension section above, the group was headlined by that $25,000 sale of Email.org by PerfectName.

Sedo booked the other four non .com gTLDs with a air of .nets and a pair of .orgs. Their quartet was led by Jewel.net at $4,423.
